I tried using DivxTOdvd to convert a PAL dvd I bought in Europe to NTSC
so I can play on my dvd player. The conversion of the video worked
partially (last 20 minutes of movie was not converted??) and the audio
was not sync'd at all (delay of a few seconds). Strange hearing a
womans voice while the guy is talking.... etc.

I forced 4:3 aspect with 29. fps for NTSC. Is there something I am not
doing correctly?

Thanks

I use a trick to fool the DVD into thinking that it is playing back an
NTSC DVD when it is playing back a PAL one. If your DVD player is
relativly new (past 3 yrs or so) then this has a pretty good chance of
working.

One can get DvdShrink from

www.mrbass.org

and IfoEdit from:

http://www.ifoedit.com/

Good luck...

From ZMAN:

There is an easy way using IFOEdit.

You have to use something like DVD
shrink to put all the files on your hard drive.

Select OPEN in IFOEdit find the files you copied.

Select VIDEO_TS_IFO and open. This should be the first file in the dir.
Click on the upper pane which is the title of the movie and it will
display information in the lower
pane. Now find the file that list PAL and 4:3.

Double click and IFOEdit will pop up a window "Video Attributes" Change
PAL to NTSC, then change Aspect ratio to 16:9 and check the box
Automatic Letterbox and click OK.

Continue down the files and locate every file with PAL and 4:3 in it
and repeat the process.

Check the region free button to make sure it is ALL. When you finish
save it and say YES to all including BUP files. Now go back to your
main directory and select the next IFO which is usually VTS_01_0.IFO
and do the same thing again and save and on and on until you have
replaced every file with NTSC and 16:9.

To see if you did it correct close IFOEdit and reopen it and go to the
directory and open the first file again and you should see:

MPRG-2 720X480 (NTSC) 525/60 (16:9) (pal-scan)
Then just burn it with whatever you use. I use Nero Express. I have
converted many region 2 UK DVD's using this and they all play great and
I don't see any loss in picture quality.

Sorry that it didn't work. I am not familiar with the Marantz. This
does work on my Samsung, Sylvania, and Sanyo. Does not work on my
oldest (and best made) Panasonic.

Looking up your player, it is simply too good. $1500 was the best
price that I found in my quick search. You need something that costs
about $100 from Walmart. :-)) These cheap players are made to be sold
world wide and they use the same firmware and will play back mpegs at
25fps or 29.97 fps. The firmware only checks for NTSC or PAL.

Here is a link to a method that I have not tried. It will be time
comsuming.

I do think that Bill's advice is the best. I had not heard of the
Cyberhome and that sounds like a good way to go. After creating the
fake NTSC disc using my method I capture it with analog and reauthor.

Cheers...

It worked !! I missed one of the lines earlier (Pal - NTSC) and redoing
it - got it !! And it's not bad. You miss a few lines on the bottom -
but I can live with that. Sure beats having to re-encode from PAL to
NTSC and take hours and hours of compute time.

Thanks again!

The easiest way do do what you want is but a CyperHome DVD player from
Walmart. It will cost you less the $40.00. It will play PAL discs on a
NTSC TV. If you want to create a new disc, just do an analogue to
digital conversion.

I did what you suggested and I don't get the "(pal-scan)" :
MPRG-2 720X480 (NTSC) 525/60 (16:9) (pal-scan)

but instead get "automatic letterbox" ... which seems reasonable. I
burned a disc this way, and my Marantz DV9500 would not recognize
it....wouldn't play it......

suggestions?

But, I'm wondering if you were able to keep all the menus, chapters and
features the DVD originally had.

I never do, but as long as the player will play back at the PAL
standard then I would think that they should. I brought a couple of
PALs back from the UK a couple of months ago. I shall have to try it.

orrrr use DV Film Atlantis v2

Quote:
Converts PAL to film-motion NTSC, or NTSC to film-motion PAL!

PAL to NTSC

Shooting PAL DV has many advantages, including 20% more resolution than
NTSC and a frame rate that closely matches film.

Unfortunately in many countries, including the US, finding PAL equipment
to show your PAL movie is almost impossible. And getting a digital-quality
conversion to NTSC is expensive, as much as $300 per tape.

But now there is a better way: shoot PAL and then convert the edited movie
to NTSC with DVFilm Atlantis. Your PAL movie will yield an excellent
transfer to film, but now you can ALSO show your project, submit to film
festivals, and even broadcast on NTSC!

DVFilm Atlantis performs the following operations in a single pass:
It intelligently deinterlaces PAL video from Quicktime or AVI files, for a
"shot on film" appearance, without reducing resolution.
It then converts 25 frames per second into 29.97 frames per second
interlaced NTSC, with a modified 3:2 pulldown, the same method used to
convert film to video.
It also converts 16:9 anamorphic to letterbox if required.
It can also letterbox (crop) 4:3 video to 16:9 if required.
It can also simulate film grain and red layer emulsion shift, if required.

No modification to the soundtrack is needed, because with DVFilm Atlantis
PAL to NTSC the duration of your movie stays exactly the same.

NTSC to PAL

Atlantis can convert three different types of NTSC to PAL: Normal 60i
(interlaced NTSC), NTSC with a 3:2 pulldown like film transferred to
video, and NTSC with a 2:3:3:2 pulldown such as created by the Panasonic
DVX100 or Canon XL-2 24P video cameras.

This function is useful for filmakers wishing to incorporate NTSC stock
footage in their PAL projects, or filmmakers wishing to edit 24P video in
a PAL editing system.
It converts the NTSC to true 24P progressive-scan, without reducing
vertical resolution.
It then speeds up the 24P to 25P (+4%), speeds up the soundtrack to match,
and enlarges the frame size to 720 x 576.
It can also convert 16:9 anamorphic to letterbox if required.
It can also letterbox (crop) 4:3 video to 16:9 if required.
It can also simulate film grain and red layer emulsion shift, if required.

Sometimes i have the same problem.I will do the conversion. It can convert the "PAL" to "NTSC",or convert back.
If someone have the same problem,i suggest use the v7.6 of WinAVI.
http://www.winavi.com/avi-to-dvd.htm
And the most important is make sure the format of the dvd disc is the same as the DVD PLAYER.
