Can I Use DVDs in DVD-RAM Cartridges? |
|
|
Hi!
If a DVD player works with both DVD and cartridge DVD-RAM, could it play an
ordinary DVD in a cartridge?
I have a Panasonic DMR-E85H, that can use DVD-RAM in cartridges. So, I
could put a DVD into a cartridge "permanently", to protect it. But does
anyone sell the empty cartridges? I'm having a bear of a time even finding
DVD-RAM cartridges with a "removable disc". OK, I did see a pack that is $26
per disc. I may wait for the price to drop a little -- I'm inventive, but
cheap.
On a side note, the Panasonic DMR-E85H is the nuttiest piece of home
entertainment equipment I've ever used. Is there a support group for owners
of this thing? It works well, but the interface was designed by escaped
lunatics.

I wouldn't try it unless the disc was a DVD-RAM disc and even then it
would be best to just buy the discs that are already in a cartridge.
The recorder may not know what to do with a non DVD-RAM disc that is
in a cartridge. For DVD-RAM I do like the cartridge format better as
it protects the discs from dirt/dust.

Check online. I got a 3 pack of the double sided DVD-RAM discs
(Panasonic brand) 3 months ago for $28.99+$8.75 shipping from B&D
Electronics. http://www.bndonline.com/ - It was the best price I could
find (if you factored in shipping cost) at the time. Or search at
http://shop.yahoo.com to find the best price currently.

Thanks, Jon! The instructions never mention using a regular DVD in a
cartridge, so I won't know for sure unless I try it.
I've found some cartridge DVD-RAMs online, in as many as a pack of three.
After much searching, I also found a place that sells empty cartridges.
Strangely enough, it looks like it may be cheaper to buy those and a
spindle of discs!

Do you have a link to the place that sells the empty cartridges? If
the price is right I could put some of my DVD-RAMs in those.

Jon,
Those are on digistor.com, $12.50 for a pack of 5. That's the only place
I've found, but I haven't ordered anything from them yet. |

The previous web site I mentioned doesn't sell cartridges now.
Here's a current source:
http://www.opticord.com/
Empty cartridges are just under $5.00 each. Use the e-mail or phone number
on that page, to place an order.
The cartridges are light and flimsy, but they work.

I recently bought a 10 pack of double sided DVD-RAM cartridges (Emtec
brand) from a seller on eBay. They are $43.00 including shipping.
That's $4.30 each and it includes the discs too.
link: http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZtotal_media
Or at the website: http://www.totalmedia.com (I only see 5 packs for
$21.50 here, but the price per disc is the same.)
I've been using them for about a week now without problems.

Gentlemen,
The company Opticrd is no longer around. It went under as of Octber. I use to work for them. If you are intrested in the Empty DVD cartridges, Have many, many, many Boxes of them. When we left, they told me to take what ever I wanted. I took all the DVD Cartridges. They are brand new and never used. If you are intrested, I am selling them on ebay for
$10.00 a 5-pack. We where selling them for $18.00 when opticord was in business, but I kept telling them it was to high. If you are intrested you can buy them form e-bay or contact me and and we can deal direct. |
