An intergrated HDTV projector/tuner with CableCard? Is it ev |
|
|
So this is the thought process:
I've decided to go with an HDTV projector (not a TV). This decision
brings up the issue of how to connect the PJ to HDTV broadcasts. For
over-the-air broadcasts, I need an ATSC tuner with 8-VSB support; for
cable service I need one with QAM support and, what the hell, support
for bi-directional CableCard 2.0. Ideally, of course, this should all
be available in one reasonably priced, integrated package...
And so, the question to my learned colleagues over here: Is there such
an animal - an HD projector with an integrated 8-VSB/QAM tuner and
dual CableCard 2.0 slots? If it does not exist and not likely to exist
in the near (and I mean really near) future, and I have to get a
standalone "traditional" HD projector, is there a standalone tuner
that meets all of these requirements? Some of these requirements? Or
am I just hallucinating?
Thanks
Bruno

Can't you hook everything upto an AV receiver... and let the receiver
handle all the switching?

I'm not sure I understand; what type of AV receiver can handle these
problems?

Well a receiver has multiple inputs right? Just plug multiple cable tuners
(over-the-air, cable box, satellite, etc) into the inputs of the receiver.
Then run 1 cable (component, dvi, etc) from the receiver to your projector.
This way you can concentrate on buying a projector, rather than a tuner
with a projector feature ; )

I don't know of any cable broadcaster that requires CableCard yet. If
you want to be able to get a digital cable feed you'll need a cable box
supported by whatever cable provider you use. A regular digital cable
set top should give you analog and digital TV and there are a number of
set tops that also support HD signals. I wouldn't worry about cable
card any time soon. Even if you had a tuner that supported it, I don't
think any cable providers are using the CA system yet. I could be
wrong...I'm just a Canadian eh. |

Standards paranoia, Bruno? This is exactly why you should abstain from
integrated components. Personally, I think you're either stalling or a
card carrying member of the SCTE. Answer: If there ever were such an
animal(and there never will be), you'll want to avoid it like the
plague. |

Nope and even if there were you'd probably want to avoid it like the plague.
Integrated AV equipment has never been known to be worth the hassles. All
too often some part of it dies and ends up taking out everything else in the
process. Better to have a stand-alone component that handles it and send
those signals to the display instead. That way if/when standards change or
the unit gets fried you don't have to suffer replacing the display at the
same time.

yup.
What I really want is a nice setup that uses something simple and
standard like Firewire to connect the various pieces, and which has a
standard communication protocol so that they can all talk with one
another and I can use a simple remote.
Oh--I guess I just described Mitsubishi....sure wish I could afford any
of their stuff... |

You are right, Nelson - that is, I think standards paranoia causes me
to stall. I don't thing the SCTE has much to do with it, although it
would be easier to blame them... |

Re: An intergrated HDTV projector/tuner with CableCard? Is i |

It's not so much an issue of "requiring" CableCards, as much as
"allowing" (i.e., supporting) them. The concept here was to minimize
clutter - if my HD cable provider (Cablevision of Long Island, in this
case, or Verizon Fios once it starts offering cable tv services in LI)
permits CableCards and the tuner has slots for them as well as the
ability to tune in to OTA HD broadcasts - then all I need is that one
tuner integrated with the HD projector and I'm done.
Having said that, however, the prevailing spirit here appears to be
strongly swayed toward the "integration is bad for you health"-side of
the spectrum... |

Got you now; the thing is - what I wanted to avoid is having to use
multiple tuners. From yours and others messages - it looks like it's
not going to happen (:
