Hopefully An Easy Question |
|
|
Would increasing my 512MB RAM to 1GB stop all this friggin' jerkiness
I get with playing Divx files? It's getting quite annoying. Is this an
easy fix, or is my system not up to par?
WindowsXP Home
2.0ghz AMD Sempron 2800+
512 MB
Thanks for any help given.

The system should be plenty fast enough - check your hard drive for
fragmentation first, and especially check for background programs that
are running since they can often take up valuable CPU time... |

No programs running at the same time (I've learned that trick), and my
hard drive is a brand new Maxtor - 160gb 7200. Should it already need
defrag? Or am I misunderstanding your comment?

check you've got no silly codec packs installed - they often use filters and
stuff that will make even the fastest system cry - better to install each
codec individually.
failing that use vlcplayer - http://www.videolan.org/vlc - that uses its own
codecs and is faster than most.

I was going to download that player, so thanks. Here's the codecs that
are installed on my computer.
Divx 6.0
Techsmith Capture Codec
Xvid MPG4
Indeovideo 5.10
iccvid.dll
ir32_32.dll
ir41_32.ax
iyuy_32.dll
msh261
msh263
msrle32.dll
msvidc32.dll
msyuv.dll
tsbyuv.dll
This is what's listed in my Video codec area. I have no idea what I
don't need here. And if anyone can tell me if there's anything in here
that would cause this constant jerkiness with my Divx files. Thanks.

I downloaded the player and I still get shaky/pausy/jittery Divx video
playback.

Since I run in Linux on a Duron 950 without any jerkiness, in 720x576 @25fps, |
I think something else is the matter.
In Billy The Gates Windows make sure the CD player's DMA setting is active
(if you play from disk).
Also make sure none of that other crap is running that probably fills some
taskbar.
And, make sure you do not have an email virus running that is busy using your
PC to send 100000000 million spam emails all over the world.
So:
DMA on
Run virus scanner
Kill applications in taskbar.
And look what other computing intensive services there possibly are running.
If that all does not help, install Linux over that Billy crap and run mplayer.
You still need DMA on. |

presumably there's something wrong with the file then.
that or you're running a million and one spywares.

Actually it COULD need a defrag if you've been downloading a lot of
multimedia, deleting, etc... Get the properties & find out first of
course...
Get a copy of TweakUI (User Interface) from Microsoft site & take a
look at what's in your startup - lots of things don't need to be there
if you accept default installs on a lot of software... Of course,
don't disable your system tray (systray) and the stuff Windows needs
to start up, but you'll be surprised what wants to run in the
background!
Good luck! |

I have over 100 Divx files, and it's jerky on all of them. They all
can't be bad. Thanks, anyways.
