Hello,

I have a 16:9 display on my TV which is HD ready. The OTA broadcast
displays people a little fat and I don't want to change the format to
4:3 to view the people normally shaped. If I get a HDTV receiver and
view the same program broadcasted in HD, will the people display normal
at 16:9?

Thanks -

It depends on if what you are watching is a HD broadcast.

Normal everyday shows, say: Jerry Springer, are not going to be
broadcast in HD so if you set the receiver to HD, you would get a square
picture in the middle with black bars to the left and right. People
would look normal.

If you are watching CSI on CBS, a show broadcast in HD, then the pitcure
would take up the whole screen and people would look normal.

If you are watching a DVD movie, depending on the aspect, you would have
black bars on top and bottom. People would look normal.

What you're describing is typical. You're probably watching in full or
some other stretch mode. I have a CRT HDTV and non-hi def programs
have little fat people all over the place. When I switch to hi def
broadcasts they suddenly become fit and trim. With CRTs it's a good
idea to fill the screen. If you have a DLP or LCD you don't have to
fill the screen as you don't have to worry about burn in.

If the source is 16:9, yes. SD sources over HD channels will be
pillarboxed with black bars or fixed bars on the left and right sides.
If you have an HD ready TV, you really should get a HD cable set top box
or get an Over The Air ATSC tuner (Samsung SIR-T451 for example)
provided you have digital HD stations in your area or you have cable
with some HD channels.

If you "don't want to change the format to 4:3 to view the people normally
shaped",
Then you are ALWAYS going to get some pictures distorted on any TV.

Does your TV have a Zoom mode? It will zoom it enough
to fill the screen. The people won't be distorted, but some
of the top and bottom of the picture will be cut out.

Yes it does. I like to see the entire picture. You do get use to
seeing slightly heavier people.
