Cannot play .avi files on any media player on XP |

Hi everyone,
I have had no problems playing any video files on my win xp using Klcodec & windows media player 10 for a long while. However lately, all of a sudden really, my wmp 10 is unable to play any .avi files(even those it used to be able to play), but it still plays .wmv and audio files fine. everytime i try to play a .avi file, an error message appears "windows media player has encountered a problem and needs to close". I then tried other players like Divx player, VLC, etc, but the same error message appears. i have tried uninstalling and reinstalling my klcodec and wmp but it has not worked. I do not really know how to reinstall my win xp so i have not tried that. Does anyone know what's wrong? would appreciate any help at all. thanks!
