Hi

Im in the UK....

I have a Hitachi 42PD5200 plasma, and i thought when i bought it that it was
HD Ready. The manual says it is 1024x1024 and supports 720p/60, 1080i/50
and 1080i/60

Is the reason that it hasnt got 'HD Ready' status just because it doesnt do
720p/50 (which i assume is 50hz version) - is this a missing requirement to
achive HD Ready status.

And the most important thing - will the XBOX 360 display at HD on my tv?
The component inputs and vga/dviinputs all accept those HD resolutions i
mentioned up there - will the machine run at 60hz all the time anyway?

Help! Im a bit new to all this so please go easy with the replies, i dont
understand really techy speak. lol .

Hi,
No manual?
Tony

Considering the first paragraph of my question says 'the manual says....' i
dont think a sarcastic remark is called for! I just wanted some advice. I
dont think you have understood what i am asking. If anyone else can help
please let me know, id appreciate it.

No, your plasma is "HD-Ready" and not an "HDTV" simply because it doesn't
have a built-in ATSC tuner. Looking at the specs, it has only NTSC and PAL
tuners. This isn't a big deal and is only marketing BS. Tuners are only
for grabbing HD over the air, and most people find getting an "HD-Ready" TV
(without a built-in tuner) to actually be an advantage of going an "HDTV"
(with a tuner). With everything being equal, a built-in tuner isn't really
worth the extra cash. If you ever want to get free HD over-the-air, just
get an external tuner -- which will be better than the built-in's. For all
intents and purposes, your "HD-Ready" TV is an "HDTV" though. You can call
it an "HDTV".

Absolutetly, and it is going to look gorgeous. Just hook it up to the
component input on the plasma. (XBox360 is going to be using component for
HD, not HDMI or DVI -- which I find to be an advantage. I'd rather it be
component than HDMI/DVI.)

Just get your XBox360 in the UK (PAL) and you'll be fine with the SD. As
for 720p, I seem to recall reading that all XBoxes (XBoxen?), regardless of
region, are going to support 720p/50, 720p/60, 1080i/50, and 1080i/60.

Don't worry, you are set. Enjoy. :^)

Cheers,
Eric
(Also looking forward to Nov 22nd, when the 360 is released.)

I have the 37PD5200 and got the same shock when I read the manual, didn't
find the HD-logo and found the missing 720p/50.

In addition what was said before, my dealer told me that this 720p50 would
even be missing only when connected by composite cable. Via DVI it would be
supported. I'm of course not sure whether this applies also to the 42".
However as said before even completely missing it wouldn't be a problem at
all.

Hi,

in the meantime I tried to connect the Hitachi 37PD5200 to a PC using a DVI
cable. The PC recognized the panel as "plug&play" device with max.
resolution of 1024x768. That meant that when I tried to set a higher
resolution, I could select a higher one, but only a rectangle of 1024x768
was sent to the panel and I could move this rectangle with the mouse (this
is the behaviour that I know from my notebook).

Can anyone help me ? How can I use a higher resolution with the panel ?

Thanks
Michael

Hi everyone,
just letting you know I have these 2 items connected via component and the display accepts both 720p and 1080i no problems and does look good!
In reference to the PC connection, try VGA connection, if I am right this supports a higher resolution on this screen this way according to my memory as I have the PC connected and the max resolution is 1600x1200 which I have used to run games. Also the resolution is defaulted to display settings of XP under normal operations so adjust this to your preference, mine is as 1024x768 otherwise I would not be able to read it from the sofa!
