I am hoping someone out there can help me. I recently purchased a dvd
recorder for my tv to copy all my old home video onto dvd. I also purchased
a dvd recorder for my computer so I can do some simple editing then create
dvd's for family members.

It has taken me a couple months, but finally got all my home videos on DVD.
Now, just to start, I'd like to make a copy of my dvds for family members.
This is where I'm running into problems.

I have Nero Express 6 that came with my dvd recorder. I tried to use "copy
DVD" but this apparently has a compatibility issue with XP sp2 so that
doesn't work. Also, when I try to "import" DVDs it cannot find the files. I
downloaded ImToo DVD Ripper, but that cannot find the files either. Even
though I can see the IFO files, it says they're not there. I also have
Pinnacle Studio 8 and it cannot find any DVD's. Everything has to be
captured from a video source. I don't have a "capture" card or source or
whatever they're called.

I've spent over $1000 on DVD recorders, firewires, firewire cards, DVD's and
software, yet I cannot simply copy a DVD for my family members to view. What
am I doing wrong?

Nero version 6.3.1.20 and onwards is SP2 compatible. Upgrade to that if
necessary. Your DVDs are not copyrighted so there should be no issue.

Join the wonderful world of video editing. I have spent a lot of time

editing 40 minutes of one video, and finally got it recorded to DVD with
Nero 6.0 full edition. I used Pinnacle Studio 9 to import the VHS video
and convert it to mpeg2. That part was pretty easy. Doing the editing
with Pinnacle Studio 9 was where the fun began!!!!!! Ha! Ha!

I'm beginning to wonder if I need a new, "clean" computer to do all of this.
My computer isn't that old (couple years), is a P4 & has 256 mg Ram but
still I'm having a lot of trouble. I've never had a project more frustrating
than this!

Install the upgrade over the top of your OEM version so the upgrade will be
free.

I am not using a video capture card. I got a vhs to dvd recorder for
christmas. I
record to dvd-rw and then edit out commericals with the recorder. it is
easy but time consuming. I am looking for a way to put my dvd-rw in my
computer's dvd drive and use software to edit out the commericals in a
fairly quick but accurate method. this way it is not so time consuming to
cut out the commericals. I will then save the file without commericals and
burn it onto a dvd-r (or dvd-rw if that is easier) with my computer's dvd
burner (separate from my other dvd drive mentioned above). if I do have to
burn the file to a dvd-rw instead of a dvd-r, what program could I later use
to copy that dvd-rw stuff on to a dvd-r? would Nero work? pinnacle studio
9?

I am looking for some recommended software and some advice, help, etc.
THANKS in advance, I am going nuts trying to figure this all out.

I don't know what type of files I get when I record to dvd-rws with a
standalone recorder. how do I find this out? thanks

It is possible to take your raw recorded dvd (on +rw), move to your computer
and edit the content. I have not done this. so there maybe one extra step,
to transfer the data to a format that the editor understands.
With a valid .avi or .mpeg file, you can then edit frame by frame. ower
producer, (which came free with my dvd burner), roxio, and pinnacle all will
do this. For nero, depends on which 'version'.

Once you know the 'packaging' used (space between commercials, length of
commercials etc) it is fast and easy to cut out what you don't want. An hour
of tv can be editied to 46 min of programming in about 15 min.

Then you have to remake the the dvd. I take the opportunity to put on a
title and menu. Again, all three will do that.
Then,. produce and burn the dvd. You can go +r -r, +rw, -rw according to the
final use. For testing, I burn to a +rw, then if it works, duplicate it
to -r for the final copy, then re-use the +rw. The raw dvd can also be
re-used.

Note that vhs quality is significantly poorer than dvd, so anytime you work
from vhs, expect poor resolution. Try to find a way to record directly to
the dvd.
