I know that some DVD players can play MPEG files, but can DVD players play
MPEGs encoded using DivX or Xvid codecs?

If you mean "can DVD players play MPEGs that were converted from DivX or
Xvid?" ... yes. But the MPEGs must be authored to produce a DVD file system
layout (vob files, ifo files, etc). You can't just put MPEG files on a DVD
and expect them to play on a set-top box. |

There are many models that actually play raw mpeg files on a DVD now....

Just a fine point here. It doesnt matter one bit what it was after you have
converted it to another video format.

And regarding the 2nd part of your reply, there are a lot of DVD players
that support MPEG file playback.
...I actually answered my own question though, I just found out tha
WalMart
is selling a couple of DivX-certified DVD players, and thanks to Biz for
pointing it out, the DivX website also seem to list a lot of models that
support DivX playback.

They pretty much list ALL models that support DivX playback.. |

There are several players that will play Divx & Xvid AVI files. I have the
Philips DVP-642 which plays them fine - also plays 'raw' mpegs & asf & wma
videos. Just burn them to a dvdr as data.
