Hi All
Could someone please advise me on what software I can use to rip .vob files
into an mpg format so I can use Pinnacle Studio 9 to edit and add effects to
them and then later burn them back as a dvd.
Thx Guys
Cheers

VOB files are MPG format. The editing software should open them without any
conversion. If it doesn't 'see' the filename rename to *.mpg. First try
selecting show all files in the file open dialog.

Hi Graham and thx for your advice.
Pinnacle studio 9 wont play or even reconise the .vob files so I did what
you said and renamed it .mpg then tried that.
Pinaccle now reconizes the file but wont play it.
I also tried just double clicking on it and windows media files opens it,
but it to wont play it. ??
Any other suggestions
Thx for your help

You could try VideoReDo www.VideoReDo.com

There is another method I have used but involves more
steps. For that you would also need the VIDEO_TS.ifo
and the vob's associated .ifo It involves TMPGEnc DVD
Author(TDA).

If you have the VIDEO_TS.ifo try right clicking and
selecting play or Open with ..., and pick a DVD player.

I thought Pinnacle Studio only worked with AVI, and
adding effects will most surely require a re-encoding. I've
done it with a nondestructive editor and it came out well,
but normally there is some loss of quality involved in this
going from highly compressed to low compression and
back to highly compressed.

Luck;
Ken

I have not used the Pinnacle software so cannot comment on its abilities.
Ken reckons it only works with AVI files which would explain a lot. It may
be simply an issue of having the appropriate codec available for Pinnacle to
use it.

If you're trying to edit the vob file, or author a DVD from it, then I don't
have an answer.

But if you're just trying to play the vob file, try VLC player. It seems to
play just about ANYTHING. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Not quite...

VOB files are a CONTAINER that holds mpeg video, several choices of audio,
subtitles, and extensive menu system capabilities. You cant just rename
them to mpg and expect them to be treated as regular old mpgs by most
programs, thats just not the way it works. You actually need to extract or
demux the streams to properly reconstruct an mpeg from a vob.

Fine if the OP were just trying to play them, but he wants to convert them
to mpeg....

WinAVI will convert .vob to .avi, then .avi to .mpg. It may be able to
convert .vob to .mpg if you know more than I do about how the program works.

I have a mini DVD camcorder and the only thing I'm trying to do is edit the video I shot to cut out the pauses and stuff and save it on my hard drive, but I can't with Windows Moviemaker because it has to be in mpeg format, but I can't get the VOB file into mpeg format because everytime I use one of the free software thingies (WinAVI and MAX) my computer crashes or it doesn't recognize the file. The VOB file I'd like to edit is 797,500 kb.

Is there an easy way to do this? Should I just go out and buy a program that is capable of doing the conversion? If so, what's a good program? I heard Adobe Premier blows and it's probably beyond my abilities anyway.

Sure, it opens and plays just fine with the Dell DVD player on my computer. I just need to cut out the long pauses and me giggling in the background (I was taping a meeting).
