Download video from a webpage - help |
|
|
Hi all,
I've a .wmv file to go on a website. It's 25.5mb!!!!
I already understand this file needs serious compression (What do you
guys suggest is the most effective?) but what my main problem is cross
platform compatibility. Would it be better to make the file a .mov
file? I want users of Macs/PC and linux to download this file.
I need help in deciding whether i need to change the wmv to a mov file.
Anu other ideas and am i serioulsy missing something here?
Cheers
Hutch
PS I'm not allowed to do any sort of streaming, just a simple download
in which the user has the player already. I just dont want to link the
user to 10 different players to view the file.

For best cross platform compatibility, I would suggest .mov, .mpg, or .rm.
Most systems will play a .mpg without having do download any codec or
special software, but file size won't be as small as it would with
something like .rm (non streamed) or avi with the divx codec.
Given your situation and what you want to do, I would consider maybe
just making a couple of versions in mpg or mov format. High bandwidth
and low bandwidth. Mpg would be nice because it won't force anyone to
download software, then again, mov is nice because it'll do a pseudo
streaming as the file downloads. |

why dont you embed the video in a flash (.swf) file... that was it will
play in a browser and there is no plug-in required and it will also be
cross platform
sorenson squeeze does it. |

| i would recommend you to use flash .swf. you can convert wmv to swf with a special app. i use for example this video to flash converter. does the job perfectly. and btw it does a very convenient thing for me: it generates html code with flash file and control buttons (play, pause, stop). that's great. |
