Hello.

I am *certainly* new to video, so please be kind :)

Anyhow, work was "cleaning house" last week and was throwing away a
Panasonic WJ-MX10 A/V Mixer. I asked if it worked, and I got a "as far
as I know" answer.

I took the thing home and tested out the audio side. They work fine.
The video side of the unit is perplexing. This is not shocking
considering how little I know about video.

The inputs on the back (see
http://personalpages.tds.net/~kpfeif/images/vid1.jpg for photo) are,
according to Panasonic...

1.0V[p-p]/75ohm NTSC composite signal, BNC connector

I have a bunch of RG6 laying around, so I took some F-to-BNC adapters,
attached them to the composite output of a VCR and the composite IN of
a TV, and tried it out. While I could see the video, everything looked
"scrambled." Note that the unit has a "Sync Out," but no "Sync In".
Also, there's light on the front panel that says "Sync Warning" and is
ALWAYS lit.

Any ideas on how I can test this?

Thanks,
KRis

It appears that the video inputs are loop-through. Does it have
termination switches? Or are you using 75-ohm terminators on
the unused connectors?

Or maybe the "genlock input" wants a stable video signal?

I'll buy it for a reasonable price if you don't want it. I think I
once bought a service manual for it on eBay.

A VCR with a stable sync? Or a consumer VCR with crappy sync?

Try a video source with a rock solid sync...a VCR with a signal coming
through the tuner (i.e. not playing a tape) will do. Or a video out
from a camcorder _not_ in the play mode, but viewing through the lens.

I'll sell it for a reasonable price, also. I have no idea what that
price may be, however.

I guess name a price. I know what they go for on ebay, so while I'm
not looking to get that much, I'd obviously like some sort of
middle-ground.

I don't know what they've been going for on eBay (nor how to find
that info?) so I don't know whether it might be worth it to me.

Just a thought but what color is the sync warning light? On my MX12 it
is also on constantly but is green when sync is happening and orange when
there is a problem.

On the MX12 I believe the sync is generated by the TBC on the second
video channel. If the second channel isn't part of the output the
warning comes on. Try hooking your input to source two and your output
to video one then play with the mixing controls.

I'm guessing this is just a typo and you used a F-to-RCA adapter to attach
the cable to the VCR. I don't know of a consumer grade deck that has
composite BNC and any F connection is something other than composite.

I'm also new at this. Sometimes it takes a new guy to figure out what the
other new guy is doing. We make mistakes the pros would never imagine. :-)

While we are all guessing, I'll do that too just because that is
what I do most of the time.

He probably means "F-Connector". Cable TV is mostly using RG-6
(to accommodate broadband and Digital Cable), so it is not unlikely
that he has RG-6 with the F connectors already installed. using
F to BNC adapters does make sense to me. I'm not saying it
doesn't exist, but I've never seen a BNC connector that is
designed for RG-6 that he could use to replace the F
connectors, and BNCs can be a challenge to
put on anyway. Not as bad as most of the
newer ones though (S, USB, I-link, etc)

I am not an engineer, but I wouldn't think cable or connectors
would cause the picture to garble like that. Doesn't the MX-1
lock to one of the inputs (maybe input 1??). then other inputs
get synced to that input with the internal TBC. Was that a unit
that had 4 inputs, but you could only go between 2 inputs at
a time. That is to say the next input had to be selected
on a bus 1st, you couldn't just go directly to it. The problem,
as described, does sound like missing sync.

You're right - that was a type.

The color of the light is orange. I'll hook things up to Source 2 and
give it a try.

Ok, it's time for me to learn: what is sync? I have a Sony CRT
projector, and I know there's some sort of "sync on green" switch in
there...does this have to do with interlacing?

Thanks,
Kris
