I have a Comcast DVR box with a lot of recorded content, but I moved
and no longer have Comcast, I now have RCN. The Comcast DVR box seems
to be totally inoperable unless it is receiving a cable signal from
Comcast, I can't even just play the DVR content.
Strangely, the first time I hooked up the RCN cable feed to the Comcast
box, it worked and I was able to playback the DVR content, but the next
day it no longer works, with or without a cable connected to the back.
It just outputs a blank screen to the TV and none of the remote buttons
do anything except power on/off.

Are there any known hacks to get the stupid Comcast box to simply
playback the DVR content without being connected to a cable signal?
Thanks!

If it does not receive the correct info in the data stream, the box will be
disabled. It can only be re-activated by receiving the proper data from the
cable company, as part of the system to prevent boxes stolen from one
company from being used in another. There is no hack for this, so unless the
cable company you're in now will authorize that box, it is now worthless.
You might as well send it back to Comcast, the actual owners of the box.

Like the other reply - send it back. Comcast is reporting unreturned
equipment charges to credit bureaus.

What make the box stupid? It's working exactly as it's supposed to.

I never intended to keep the box, I fully intend to return it, just
wanted to watch the
DVR content if possible prior to doing so.

Thanks for the info. I don't intend to keep the box, just want to get
at some of my DVR content. Do you know if the box is operable for a
period of time (i.e. 24 or 48 hours) after being reactivated? I can
hook it back up at my old place so that it is reactivated (I still have
service there for another week), but I can't stay or leave it there to
playback and record the content, so I need to bring it back to my
current place and hope it works long enough for me to watch and/or
record some of it.
The reason I ask is that the box initially worked when hooked up to
RCN, but it had only been a few hours after it was disconnected from
Comcast. The following day it no longer was working.
