We bought a DVD (Toshiba) about 3 months
ago. It reads and records, and handles 3 formats
of which includes DVD ram. However when I
play any of the DVD's on it that I buy at the store,
I get shadow background lines that fade in and out
on the video. What's up with this?

It sounds like it could be the copy protection. Are you routing the

signal through another component, a VCR perhaps?

It sounds like the copyright protection on the disc. If you were to
record a DVD disc on a video recorder then you'd get this problem
(it's to prevent people from copying DVD's.
Check on your setup as the signal from the DVD recorder should go
directly to your TV. You might be feeding it to a video recorder
first.
The other thing that can cause this is not having the DVD recorder
setup for either Pal or NTSC. Take a look at your settings.

It's connected straight to TV from the Unit.
Our cable connection comes in to the Unit.
Both cables are Coax.
Pretty simple, there is not video connected.
The unit is a Toshiba DVD/VHS player/recorder
bought 4 mo.s ago. Model D-VR3. It shows faint
lines in the background that fade in and out of view
while we are watch DVD's that we bought OR that
we record on DVD Ram. What the heck is causing
this?

Are you trying to copy commercial DVDs? If that's what you're talking

about, then it's certainly the copy protection doing its thing. TV
programs or similar material should copy to DVD-R OK.

You say "both cables are coax." Does that mean that you are feeding the
DVD player's signal to the TV by RF signal and tuning the TV to channel 3
or 4. (??) Has your player been properly set for this type of output?
There might be an option in the set-up menu for this. If you have AV
inputs to the TV, I'd use those and turn off the RF output. If your TV
doesn't have AV inputs or if using them doesn't fix the problem, I'd try a
different TV; it's possible (albeit unlikely) that your TV is the culprit.
To be absolutely certain which unit has the problem, I suggest you:
1 - Play a commercial DVD on a different player through your current TV.
2 - Play a commercial DVD [and maybe a DVD-R you've recorded of
non-protected material] on the suspect Toshiba unit through a different
TV.
This, at least, should nail down whether the TV or the DVD player is
misbehaving.

If the problem is definitely with the DVD unit, I'd contact Toshiba for
advice and/or service. At 4 months old, parts are still covered by
warranty, although the labor warranty ran out at 90 days.

Good luck!

Electrical interference can cause this.

If your DVD/VHS near anything electrical.
(maybe the TV is sitting on to of the DVD/VHS equipment.

You could try moving the DVD/VHS equipment to a new location.

They copy ok but they play back with the lines.
You say "both cables are coax." Does that

All I know is there are two coax connectors

on the DVD recorder/player. One says in from
antenna/cable and the other says out to the TV.
These are the ones I used. I do have to set the
channel on 3 to enter the setup or play menu.
I will try your suggestion of connecting the
different units. Thanks.

Ugh, well yes, the TV sits on the next shelf up
on the entertainment center (just like I thought
everyone did) I can try moving the DVD but
I will have to go by a longer cable.

You might be able to borrow a longer cable from a friend to try

re-locating the DVD equipment.
It could also be caused by a faulty cable between the DVD equipment
and your TV or a bad connection on the cable. Trying a different cable
would check for all these things.
Some brands of equipment can be sensitive to electrical interference.
