On a few DVD titles I own the "CC" for "closed captioning" is on the
box, but I can't get the closed captioning to appear when I play them.
I engage the sub-title button on the remote and nothing comes up. I
even engage the closed captioning setting on the tv. What gives?

The DVD subtitle is separate from closed captioning. Subtitles are sort
of an overlay encoded with the video. Closed Captioning is a digital
signal sent on an 'extra' scan line just above the main picture.

Depending on your DVD player, it may be doing some form of digital
processing that is stripping out the closed captioning.

Subtitles, if included on the disk (not all have it, even if they have
closed captioning) should always work.

With out going into detail, I found out why I wasn't getting closed
captioning. The problem is the dvd player......JVC dvd players in
particular. To quote JVC customer service........."none of the JVC dvd
players support closed captioning". I found this to be true of my 3
year old JVC player, and also a new model JVC player. Tried a new
Panasonic dvd player, and got the closed captioning to work fine.
