From the well-stocked bar at The Pekin Inn, where jazz happens, comes a
wondrous new concoction for the Christmas season: The Mistletoe Kiss.

2 ounces Absinthe
1/2 ounce Damiana
1/2 ounce Cortas grenadine (or any real grenadine)
garnish with a green maraschino cherry

You may substitue Absente (we haven't tried Ricard or Pernod). Place all
ingredients less the cherry in an Absinthe drip glass or similar and
stir with three ice-cubes. Top off with more ice cubes and stir again. Add
the cherry. Shortly, the oil in the herbs will coagulate around the ice,
becoming a frosty pink. Below the ice it will remain deep red. The green
cherry adds a Christmas touch. Very
entertaining, very intense and very delicious. And a very, very, very merry
Christmas to all of you!!!

First, outside of El Paso, TX, where's the average gringo
going to find damiana liquor? (Hint:you can buy it in the
Wal-Mart in Cd. Juarez, Chihuahua)

The chances of finding all these ingredients in a bar in Pekin, IL
is extremely remote. Please tell me the address where I can
find this bar in Pekin.

I always thought that Absinthe was illegal because of it's very poisonous
character. There was a good article on it's history in Scientific American
Magazine back a few years. Absinthe causes mental disorders.

The stuff in that drink you refer to must be some kind of substitute
to get past the FDA. although the news lately suggests otherwise!!
What do the Alcohol & Tobacco folks think??

In these parts, Sal's (a chain) sells Damiana.

Actually, my studio, The Pekin Inn, was named after the famous Pekin Inn of
Chicago's south side during the 1920's where King Oliver, Louis Armstrong etc.
played great jazz. However, Absente (easily available at big liquor stores),
an Absinthe substitute, works perfectly in this drink. If you want more
authenticity, put some wormwood extract in it! The Cortas grenadine is
available in middle eastern and Indian supermarkets, but I've been told that
Angostura now has a grenadine with pomegranate juice, which is what you need.
Monin also makes one. Collins does not contain any pomegranate juice as far as
I know. Oh yes, Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to you!

Thujone (absinthe) is a potent neurotoxin; one fellow who drank 10 ml of
essential oil of wormwood experienced acute renal failure.

Probably not your best prescription, Uncle Ned!

Wormwood is found also in Campari, easily available. It is also found in any
Health store. I've taken small amounts of wormwood for years to settle my
stomach. If you try to get high on wormwood, I think you'll be quite
disappointed. As I stated in a previous post, try it with Absente if you're
afraid of the wormwood; it makes a perfect substitute. You don't need the
wormwood. I'm not trying to kill you, just share a great cocktail!!!

Absinthe containing low concentrations of thujone is readily available

in many European countries. I've seen it (La Fee brand) for sale in the
duty free at Heathrow. It's an interesting buzz if you don't overdo it
- it makes you alert without feeling really wired. But Absinthe
containing wormwood extract is still illegal in the US, as far as I know.

Drinking pure wormwood oil is another matter entirely - similar to the
difference between drinking a bottle of beer, and chugging a fifth of
Everclear!
