Big Screen TV - Money No Object |

I have the opportunity to assist a relative in the purchase of a big
screen TV. The relative does not currently have a big screen TV. The
relative is rich in $$$ and has advised me that money is not an issue
in this project. The viewing room size is approx 14 feet wide and 45
feet deep. The relative's seat in the room is currently approx 15 feet
from the viewing wall and offset to the right. The relative is 80
years old and watches alot of TV. TV shows watched are mostly news,
sitcoms and old-time movies. The relative also watches Sunday local
church sermons recorded on DVD due to an inability to attend church
services. Visiting relatives like to watch sports (Football) and DVD
movies.
What display technology is best for this situation? (LCD, Plasma, ?)?
What size is best for this situation?
What would you do in this situation?
What other data do you need to know about this situation to make
intelligent recomendations for this purchase?

DLP projector, probably.

You have to ask the relative if they want a big-TV type of experience,
or a theater type of experience.

Talk to the relative to get a better understanding of what s/he wants.
But I think the basic answer is get a high-lumen 800x600 DLP
projector, a viewing screen, and a sound system. Don't get a higher
resolution projector since those projectors are intended for computer
presentations and the digital scaling they must do to show video
doesn't look so good on the screen.

Take your relative to a store and let him/her look at some different
types of setups and find out what s/he likes. |

14 X 45' ? That is a tunnel. very odd shape. Where would the TV be
located?

I have an 29" sony crt tv, and no matter how strange it sounds has the best
picture I have seen around.I have seen one of those infamous plasma displays
in a local shop and the picture is *fully* pixelated.Mine sells here for
just 400 euro, and will last a lifetime (when all these digital crap will
not exist anymore).There are 32" CRTs, too.Rear-projection tvs suck though,
I think you go crt.
