Is one amp enough ? - Soundstream Class A 10.0 |
|
|
Hi,
I had a discussion with a frend of mine who is an expert in car audio.
It is whether I should upgrade my system from one Soundstream Class A
10.0 to two amps, for driving my new a/d/s 346cs. I current have one
Soundstream Class A 10.0 (2x25W), and I love its sound. My friend
told me that I can't drive my speaker using one amp, and I'll love it
more if I drive my speaker through biamping, e.g. two 10.0's.
My question is whether one Soundstream Class A 10.0 can driver
power-hungry a/d/s 346cs? If not, I need to replace to a bigger amp,
like Arc Audio 2100XXK, or do biamping? a/d/s support suggested I
should get a newer amp, better design and reliability.
One more thing, my friend told me that I won't get the same sound as
of Soundstream when moving to a non-Class A amp.
I would appreciate any suggestion.
Thank you,

Let's see if I have this right. You are using this amp with those speakers
and you love the sound. An "expert" comes along and tells you it won't
work. What's wrong with this picture?

I'd like to know exactly what's wrong with your current amp. Has it failed?

Technically that's true, but that's not what you're interested in. You're
interested in whether you can hear a difference in sound or not. The best
thing to do is listen, if you get the chance. Otherwise there's not much
sense in paying more money. |

As I understand it you should power your speakers with an amp that provids
at least 70% of their power rating at 4 ohms, not 2 ohms. |

Power ratings are meaningless, which renders any rules of thumb based on
power ratings to be meaningless as well. Just power the speakers with as
much power as you can afford to power them with (within reason, of course).
In this regard, more is indeed better.
However, as jeffc pointed out, if you like the way it sounds, why bother
changing it? |
