My VCR just bit the dust. I always planned to replace it with a
full-blown TiVo-type system with all the bells and whistles. I just
imagined it would be a little further down the road. I see where TiVo
now has a system for under $100. I'd like to buy something in that
price range but without the subscription service. Perusing Usenet, I
see mentions of standalone systems but I can't figure out how to tell
them apart from the subscription units.

Could I get some recommendations for a cheap "starter" system whose only
functionality is to replace a VCR? I won't mind scrapping the system in
a few years when I can afford the $800 unit with the $300 subscription.
I also don't mind buying on eBay if that's the only place to get such a
thing.

The best DVR is the ReplayTV 5080 with Commercial Advance and Internet
Video Sharing. I bought my most recent one directly from ReplayTV for
$100 brand new on special. However, they have that $300 life-time
subscription fee thing.

So look at http://www.snapstream.com/Products/beyondtv/ It has similar
functions, but is much less expensive. The disadvantage is that it uses
a PC to do the work, rather than being a stand-alone unit.
