help a cluless guy! Need audio system for classic car, MP3 s |

Hello All:
I have some real basic questions ans a specific problem. Please excuse
the rambling, I haven't done car audio since the 80's and am
overwhelmed by the options. So let me explain my problem(s).
I own several classic cars from the 50's through 70's, I drive them all
at different times, but not full time. I want a good music system when
I drive them but I don't want to pay for a $500 system for each, that
would cost me over 3 grand! So I thinking a small system I could move
from one car to the other may be possible. Kinda like the underdash
units of the late 70's. So appearance is not an issue. I know the
speakers will stay in each car. Also these cars have the dash radio
with the two knobs, I will not cut up the dashes to install a new
reveiver.
I was talking with one audio system installer about avoiding cutting up
the dash. He said that they put the system in a remote spot (trunk) and
use an IR extender to transmit he signal from the driver to the unit.
This sounds like a good option for that problem. Any comments? But I am
concerned about changing the CDs and don't think a radio and CD changer
would be very easy to move from car to car.
On the removable issue, I was concerned that if I put this unit in the
trunk I will not be able to use a traditional CD player, so I was
thinking of MP3s. I don't know alot about them, but think I can record
alot of mucic on a single CD. This way I would put a single CD in the
player and only have to change the CD out occassionally. OR I was
thinking of sattelite radio, no CDs, have the unit in the trunk act as
only an amplifier, the satellite unit is removable.
I know this is alot of problems, ths is why I haven't made a purchase
in awhile. But I know there is alot of new stuff out there and this is
why I'm asking you guys, the experts. What would you do?
