Hi,
just wonder where to start in downloading movies and burning onto dvd to
watch on tv.
I notice most of the movies come in avi format usually 1 and 2,
and about 200,000kb each.
I have nero 6 and dvd burner, also shrink and clone dvd 2.
What else do I need to make a start.
Getting an unlimited download plan.

Any Help appreciated.
Roo

If you're getting your broadband connection just to download movies, cancel

it and use the money to buy movies every month. Same cost, better quality,
and legal.

Well, broadband prices vary. I've seen $25, $50, and $55 from one provider,
depending on speed. To beat $25, you'd have to go with Net Flix, and borrow
lots of videos to beat the download route.

But who uses the net just for Usenet? The high speed is useful for
everything else. So if you're already spending $15 or $20 for low-speed, you
might as well pop in a few more bucks for broadband.

Getting a MPEG/DIVX/Xvid capable DVD set top player eg Phillips 642,
will make your life a lot easier, since you can watch the files on
your TV without tediously converting them first to MPEG and then
authoring them to DVD. You just burn the files to DVD as a data disc
instead (much faster).

Thanks Jason,
I would have got broadband anyway as it was not available before. It's
just I would like to find the workings entailed.
If I download 2 avi files of 200,00kb each, how would I then change them to
mpeg.????
Then once in that form I would need to use shrink to burn to dvd.????
What would 400,000 kb equal once converted to mpeg and what would shrink,
need to shrink to get
a half decent quality on one dvd.
If looking around for other set top players what else would work other than
Phillips and how do the
prices run.

Thanks Roo

I would personally not even bother with converting the avi files
(which are usually Xvid or DIVX codecs in your case) to MPEG, as you
are converting an already very compressed format to another compressed
format (MPEG), which would result in a significant loss of picture
quality. There are many tools available for converting AVIs to MPEG
if you remain keen eg Power Video Converter. Once you have converted
to MPEG, remember that you still need to author to DVD in order to
play in a normal DVD player, and then Shrink it if it is greater than
4.3 gigabytes. If you have nothing else to do with your time, then go
for it.....

DIVX capable DVD players include:

1) Zensonic 330 - $139
2) Phillips 642 - $150
3) Pioneer 676A - $215
Other brands include XMS, Samsung, etc.

Personally, I would go for the Pioneer 676A. More expensive, but you
get a quality player with 3 year warranty, plus supports DVD Audio and
SACD. Also supports advanced DIVX features such as QPEL and GMC.

All the players are still very new however, and not perfect in 'AVI'
support until new firmware is released. Subtitle support (in AVI) is
limited again until new firmware is released. Zensonic already
supports subtitles, but not perfectly. All also have problems with
newer Xvid codecs, which is a limitation of the chipset used in these
machines.

Thanks for the input, I think I will forget the converting, and go for your
first choice of Philips depending on price and availability. In the ratings
listed with the divx capability it got the top marks, website below:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDname=&Search=Search&country=&orderby=Name&hits=25&listall=Top+Reported
I think and hope it could become an interesting hobby.
Thanks again for your time and advice.
We are a bit downunder here and availability not always easy.

Don't overlook a connection between your PC & TV as an alternative
method to play videos. While the MPEG4 savvy stand-alones have made
some strides, they are nowhere near as capable as your already at hand
PC. If your graphics card does not already support TV out, consider
this sort of device (just one example provided)
http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/PC-TV_video_adapter.html

If you have a PC within cable-shot of a TV and if it's not too noisy,
this is a handy little gadget.

I agree that there's no need to convert avi to mpeg ... if you're going to

view them on a compatible player.

But conversion to mpeg can be done without sacrificing quality, if done
properly.

It would be cheaper and better to replace the PC graphics card with one that

has TV-out capability. For the price of this scan converter ($130), you can
do that, and have money left over.

Also, keep in mind that good scan converter costs WAY more than $130. I'd
check on product reviews before I'd buy one this cheap.
