Divx on flashdrives? |
|
|
Hello group,
I see a few usb flashdrives, the little keychain ones around. I saw a 1 gig
one at my local computer show. It got me to thinking now that they have a
gig in capacity now.
Anyone use one to put a typical 700 meg sized divx/xvid onto one?

I use a 512meg SD card to store WMV files. I do use Dr. Divx to
convert VOB files over to AVI files and from there, I convert them to
the much smaller WMV files that allow you to store hours of video on
the SD card. Keep in mind that I store them in that format to play
them back on my pocket PC and it is working out pretty good. The only
gripe I have is that when I make the final WMV conversion down to the
pocket PC size, it squishes the letterbox size video so that the folks
look enlongated. I have yet to find a way around that problem so that
the conversion is true to the original. If anyone is using something
that works to do this...please pipe in.

This is admittedly a guess since I don't use a pocket PC. But if you
actually made the black areas above and below a letterboxed movie part
of a 4:3 frame, would it still be distorted on playback?
Unfortunately, bits used for those black areas would necessarily steal
quality away from the movie itself, but it might be a way to preserve
the original aspect ratio — visually anyway.

I use Divx to watch TV on a Palm T3. I get a one hour program onto 100-120
MB. I don't know how to code to WMF but on divx, you have the opportunity to
crop and resise which allows you to convert for the palm format.

Ok....that's really simple...if you want the simple way to do it. You
can use the Windows Movie Maker that comes with Windows to convert
your AVI files over to the WMV format. Just drop your clip onto the
story board and use the Save Move File option to do the conversion.
How do you go about croping the video frames in DivX? I'm kind of new
at some of this. I've just gotten to the point where I've solved my
audio sync problems. I just needed a primer on frame rates vs. sound
lenght and found it on the web finally. BTW-I use Dr. Divx to for the
intial VOB conversion. I'm playing around with it right now and I'm
sure I haven't figured out all the features it offers and solutions to
my momentary conondrums. Any light you can shed on croping and how you
do it, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the tip...It is GREATLY APPRECIATED! I will certainly give
it a shot to see if the video quality is improved as a result. I know
that there is a setting that allows me to eliminate those areas I just
have to play with it a bit more to see if it also preserves the
original aspect. You got me curious now. Can't wait to try it.

That's ok Mick.
I think I figured out how to work out the issue. It's tedious and time
consuming, but I think I know how to get the job done. The thing is
that I have to use Dr. DivX, Nandub and finally Power Video Converter.
The Nandub will actually let me trim the DivX AVI files to the aspect
ratio that I want(by croping the picture) and the Power Video
Converter will let me convert to the final WMV format. I only had time
to try a small snippet of an AVI and I didn't really calculate the
amounts I would have to trim the picture, but I think I've seen some
improvement on the resulting video. I'll try a more drastic amount of
croping to see how that turns out. The conversion is a breeze if it
isn't in widescreen/letterbox/anatropic format...but I guess I would
like to cover all the basis when it comes to what I can do with the
video. I'm just having a ball working out the bumps in the road. ;)

You are probably right on the hassle end, but the quality is
acceptable to me at least. There was one program that I got to play
DivX files on the pocket PC, but the problem is really in that it only
kept crashing and even if it didn't, the DivX AVI files are way too
big to get four hours worth of video on. OTOH, WMV files are way more
compact and as I said, they are of acceptable quality.
The one thing that I find is that, oddly enough, Windows Movie Maker
doesn't always handle the video conversion to WMV files properly and I
have to resort to another program that does the conversion. It is
cumbersome and I am on the lookout for a program that can do it all.
So far, no luck. That may be partly because Microsoft pretty much owns
the WMV format and I think they would get into a legal hassle if other
companies tried to write programs to handle that format. At least,
that is one of the messages I got on a conversion program I tried to
use the WMV files with. I'm begining to really dislike this monopoly.
As a consumer, I would like to have more options and less restrictions
on those options.

I was looking at simply storing a movie (typical 700meg) on a drive of over
700meg capacity to play on any type of pc. Its more of a comparison of CD-R
vs USB Flash Drives. I would assume the flash drive as simply being a drive
that can do what any IDE type drive could do. Correct?
thanks,

You seem to be converting to Divx and then to WMV. Is there not a program
which will let you watch Divx on the pocket PC? My guess is that each
conversion causes you hassle and loses you quality.

I don't use Dr Divx, so I can't advise you on that one. Sorry.
Mick
The conversion is a breeze if it
isn't in widescreen/letterbox/anatropic format...but I guess I would
like to cover all the basis when it comes to what I can do with the
video. I'm just having a ball working out the bumps in the road. ;)

I use Divx to watch TV on a Palm T3. I get a one hour program
onto
100-120
MB. I don't know how to code to WMF but on divx, you have the
opportunity to
crop and resise which allows you to convert for the palm format.
I'm kind of
new
at some of this. I've just gotten to the point where I've solved
my
audio sync problems. I just needed a primer on frame rates vs.
sound
lenght and found it on the web finally. BTW-I use Dr. Divx to for
the
intial VOB conversion. I'm playing around with it right now and I'm
sure I haven't figured out all the features it offers and solutions
to
my momentary conondrums. Any light you can shed on croping and how
you
do it, would be greatly appreciated.

Hello group,
I see a few usb flashdrives, the little keychain ones around.
I
saw
a 1
gig
one at my local computer show. It got me to thinking now
that
they
have
a
gig in capacity now.
Anyone use one to put a typical 700 meg sized divx/xvid onto
one?
I use a 512meg SD card to store WMV files. I do use Dr. Divx
to
convert VOB files over to AVI files and from there, I convert
them
to
the much smaller WMV files that allow you to store hours of
video
on
the SD card. Keep in mind that I store them in that format to
play
them back on my pocket PC and it is working out pretty good.
The
only
gripe I have is that when I make the final WMV conversion down
to
the
pocket PC size, it squishes the letterbox size video so that
the
folks
look enlongated. I have yet to find a way around that problem
so
that
the conversion is true to the original. If anyone is using
something
that works to do this...please pipe in.

TMPGEnc 3.0 XPress can encode to WMV format.
I use SmartRipper to choose what I want from the
DVD and make a single vob file on my hardrive.
Then I use virtualldub-mpeg2 to get a wav file from the vob.
I guess if got the ac3 reader for tmpenc I might be able to
skip this step. Also I think I dont get stereo?
Finally I load both vob and wav into TMPgenc3.0express
and two pass encode a wmv file. It's slooooooow.
By the way the vob goes on the hardrive, the wav file
onto a ramdisk and the WMV output file goes onto a 1 gig
USB memory stick. That way I spread the pain around.
So far this has always worked great except for ONCE! Arrgh! |

Anyways, as I said, the problem that I have is of a somewhat different

It does for a givin file length. Two pass allows you to set
a file length for the finished file. The first pass analizes
and sets a compressability score for each frame so during
the second pass the program knows exacly how many bytes it
can use to encode each frame. Youll get constant quality
since each frame gets its fair share of bytes based on how
difficult it is to compress.

Do these wmv files that play stretched on the pda also
play stretched on the computer you used to create them?
If not then it must be your movie player software on the pda.
Maybe there is a "retain aspect ratio" button that has been unchecked.
This combined with the option of "stretch to fit screen" could
deform the image. |
