AVI creation question - DVD Shrink/Dr DivX/ARCHOS PVP |
|
|
With my eye on purchasing an Archos AV-420 in the near future, I've been
looking into ripping some of my DVDs so they're ready to go. (This unit
reads DivX 3,4,5 etc.)
1. I used DVD Shrink to rip the main movie segment (2hr 15min) of a DVD, and
reauthored - this produced 4.3GB worth of VOB files (I guess this is a
preset to fit on a single DVD)
2. I used Dr Divx to create an AVI file from the DVD Shrink output: on the
'Choose Output' panel I selected the 'Portable Video' certification level:
DivX 600kbps average bitrate, MP3 64kbps average bitrate, 352x272
resolution: I chose this because the resolution is the closest to the AV420
LCS resolution. Result: a nice 650MB AVI file that seems to play just fine.
At this point, I imagine I'm good to go, but then I downloaded software from
the ARCHOS website - 'Archos MPG4 Translator' that produces AVIs
specifically tailored for the AV420. It converts AVIs of various formats
into 'standard MPEG4 Simple Profile AVI' : the suggested output resolution
is 320x224 for the AV420.
So I ran my Dr DivX created AVI through this software, and it resulted in a
new AVI file which was twice as big (about 1.2GB). So since hard drive space
is a concern, I wanted to ask anyone with experience here whether I should
bother with this last step (to set exact resolutions etc), or just go with
the smaller Dr DivX AVI?

Personally, I would set DVD Shrink to "no compression," if I intended
to convert to Divx. Might as well have all the picture info available
for the codec to do its jib.

If you choose a vertical value that is half or less the value of your
system (NTSC or PAL) you will automatically shed any problems related
to interlace. If the source material is progressive, then this is not
an issue. The Archos software may merely be taking a middle ground,
which works in all modes.

Well, something else changed in your settings, as the ONLY influence
over file size, for the same play time, is bit rate.

I'm inclined to go with the mfgr's suggestion. But, if that produces
borders on your display AND if you don't notice the image distention
or interlace artifacts when you choose precise dimensions, go with the
precise.
After all, the picture is in the eye of the beholder ;-)
