audio sync problem with xvid |
|
|
Hello group,
I cant find an answer on any other divx or xvid newsgroups, maybe you can
help.
I make beautiful 2-pass Xvid copies with NeoDivx. However, I have
encountered a small audio/video sync with one movie, Taking Lives.
I have in the past used other programs to author dvd's before I settled with
stuff like DvdShrink and Neodivx etc... But its been a while.
Would I want to pull a wav file and avi file from my broken Xvid using
VirtualDub? And then re-combine them? I have most of the popular programs
saved to a disk, but dont want to reload them on my newly built pc if I dont
have to.
thanks all,
SL

You may not have to resort to the WAV/recompress route if the audio is
a standard format and bitrate. VirtualDub has a manual resync
function under Audio > Interleaving... It takes some trial and error,
but audio can be skewed forward or backward with minus or plus
millisecond indicators. With each setting, you can review with VD
until sync seems correct. Then set video for Direct Stream Copy
(audio should already be set that way) and save as an AVI.

tried without the slowing/speeding up of the sound. It came out fine, but
with the expected sync problem. I just wanted to see if it would produce a
valid avi. It did.
I then looked a the interleaving properties. It mentions a 500ms audio
delay before video. It seems that the video is about a half second behind
video. So at the option of delay, I went 500ms of delay to the audio. It
is doing so as I write. Do you know what sort of ms delay I should use to
get that half second Im looking for?
thanks so far,

If audio is playing about a half second late, then you should enter
-500 in the block under "Audio skew correction." Once you OK that,
you should be able to start the movie and skip around to check for
sync. You'll probably find you need to refine the number to get a
precise sync. It's a little tough to get exactly right sometimes. I
find myself wishing for a setup that would give me a slider I could
adjust as the movie is running.
Keep in mind that video must be set to "Full processing mode" while
you're checking out your sync settings, but should be set to "Direct
stream copy" to save as AVI.
I really don't know what the "Audio block placement" at the top does
since I've never used that.

Re: audio sync problem with xvid |

Ive made about 8 attempts so far. It is only taking about 6 minutes to redo
the film. Much easier than encoding a whole new 3-4 hour, 2 pass Xvid. So
multiple retries are not that bad. I am using a different pc for this.
That is less painful as well.
Anyways, I have gotten mixed results. I have tried 1000ms and it seemed to
get slightly better. So I tried a 2000ms setting. It seemed to be much
worse. I have gone even up to 10000, but that was way off by about 4
seconds. I have tried -1000 just to see, but the results still seemed that
the audio is leading the video. hmmmm.......
I will try more settings, at least im getting results and quickly.

It's even quicker to open the movie in VirtualDub, enter the skew
setting, OK it, and then run quick sections of the movie before you
save it. Running the movie in VD will reflect whatever setting you've
entered. You don't need to save it until you hit on a sync setting
that works.
Good luck!

Just out of curiosity, are you working with a vbr audio track? If so, try
saving the wav file and recompressing it with a cbr setting. It maybe
easier to sync the audio after. I downloaded a couple of avi's that had
sync problems and this method fixed them, and even made one just a little
smaller so it managed to fit on one disc in the process.

I got close and just watched the movie that way. Yes, I gave up on the
project. I guess I should of have mentioned it was originally a 1.3gig file
that was split during encoding into two files. It was only the second file
that seemed to suffer. I can almost even point a finger at the final
burning somehow of to the cd. It played fine on the HD, and the second file
is ok. But, I did use an old inferior quality disk to record to. I then
copied back off the CD-r to HD. That is when I noticed the skew of the
sound. Hmmm......
