I am currently using DVD shrink to make backups of my DVD's. I want to start
on the VHS tapes now. I just want to be able to do a 1-1 recording no menus
so all I have to do is put the disk in and press play. My video card does
not have an input port. I am thinking of something I can plug into my USB
port.

Been using this http://www.plextor.com/english/products/ConvertX2.htm for
several weeks now. Really like it because of the USB connection and it can
output (via WinDVD Creator software included) in many different formats
(Mpeg1/2, DivX, Mpeg4, etc.)
Use it for VHS recorded TV movies and shows, plus MiniDV camera shots.

I have been using this device, which is potentially excellent, for a couple
of weeks but it has not been without issue:

The driver supplied does not work reliably with the SP2 update on Windows
XP. There's a driver on the US web site that works.

WinDVD is a clunky application, but works well. It will not allow you to
create oversize VOB files (or rather it appears to do so but does not write
the full file) thus you cannot use DVDShrink to make best use of disc space
if you follow that approach. The editor is otherwise quite good and easy to
use, but prone to hanging and the application seems to be very fussy about
where it will create project files that work, so it is all too easy to lose
edits.

There is a simple GoCap utility available from the Plextor US web site that
offers an alternative method of capture.
The device is difficult to use with other capture utilities - in fact I have
yet to produce good results with *any* other capture software.

The hardware itself is very good, but would have been better had all the
connectors been on one side. The quality, particularly when connected to a
digital TV converter or Satellite converter is superb.

In conclusion this is a fine product let down by flaky supplied software.

Would I buy another? Probably not, but are the alternatives any better?

I use the Pinnacle DVC-150 and supplied software (Pinnacle 8 Junk) to
capture.
I use DVD Lab to author to hard disk.
I use DVD shrink if necessary.
I use Nero to burn the DVD.

All in all, very satisfactory. I've done 314 tapes (out of 848) so far and
have never encountered a problem with out of synch audio so commonly
reported by others.
