I need a set of 'throw away' PA mains for small rooms. Two way of course...
and I won't be running instruments through the cabinets (though I will use
them for CD playback in between sets). Lead and backing vocals only, 3-5
singers. I need something that sounds as good as possible, but something I
don't care about... (i.e., something that one of my sloppy musicians drops
and/or blows and I don't care too much about having to replace it).

I have been thinking about the powered Mackies, but I already have some
power amps. Plus, I'm also wondering what else is out there.. can I get way
with spending less without the audience cringing? Here are some things I'm
considering... comments on any/all are welcome and appreciated. All are 12"
two ways (I generally much prefer the sound of 12's for vocals over 15's,
and will add a sub when necessary for full range). 200 watts RMS is my
baseline.

I've already begun the process of visiting my local dealers and doing some
listening, but opinions are appreciated on what you guys think... I'm not
much of a live sound veteran.

- Mackie c300 (passive version of the 450)
- Peavey TLS 2X
- Yamaha S112V
- Alesis ProVenue 1201 (anyone heard these at all? brand new?)
- EV Sx100+
- Behringer B1220

Thanks for any advice!

Turbo TXD series? - Very nice sound, passive subs if needed, look great and
if a muso drops one on himself he'll know about it. I think they have
protection circuits for the compression drivers too. TXD121 is a small 12" 2
way, bit bright, goes down to 60 hz or lower if pushed, 300 rms 128dB max.
Not sure of price.

I would switch from the behringers if you could source me turbos for

only 2x the cost
generally the cheapest turbos are 550$ where the behringer are 150$
the turbos sound better

Lol - on my purchasing I'll never comprimise on the essentials...

Speakers, mixer, multicore, mic cables, vox mics are all top gear - in my
case martin / jbl / turbo / yam / VDC / sennheiser / shure / akg; other
stuff can be unbranded, behringer, mackie, alesis or whatever works as if it
doesn't work on the night I can patch it out and few will notice - often
thought of building a rack full of faked dbx and drawmer rack panels with
flashing lights to look cool.

that need

For what you get in the "performance for your $$" in the budget
category. Your going to be hard pressed to beat the Behringers both $$
wise and sound wise. At least they are using decent speakers and real
compression drivers and not piezo's like the other speakers in the
same price range.

Hmm... that sounds like a ringing endorsement of the Behringer! :)

Tim and George, thanks for the opinions... much appreciated.

I understand that now... I considered them cheap (about GBP 600 per pair) as
they're about half what my Q-lights cost.... I use a lot of dB opera 412
plastic boxes (mine are powered, they make passives) for odd gigs, and I
have spares... they might be more appropriate...

Behringer 1220s are 300 quid /pair here, yamaha 112s are about 400. I'm not
sure which I like the least...

Wouldn't it make more sense to sepc an SPL? Watts don't necessarily take
sensitivity into consideration.

Look, you'd really be better off spending money on decent speakers and mics
first, that's the rule of thumb.

I've got some killer dual 12" by 1" cabinets I'd like to sell, but I'm not
sure the size is what you'd want. They're about 85lbs., 32" tall, 16"wide,
about 16" deep, trapezoidal shape, good handles, dual Speakons, all baltic
birch construction, biamp only. Very good sound, flat to 80hz, grey carpet
covering. They were my primary speakers before I built my SPL Trik Traps.
Eminence 12" drivers, DDS horns(60hx40v). I'll take $600+shipping for the
pair, fob Chicago area, and they'll pretty much trump any of the speakers on
your list.

Best regards,

John Halliburton

Not sure if you can get HK Audio over in the US.... But if you do try
Premium 112 or Linear 112. Both pricewise a little over Behringer but
cheaper than the Turbo box mentioned earlier......
