*** Handwound Transformers *** |
|
|
I notice these people are still trading their wares on ther internet.
I would just like to warn people that they may NEVER recieve anything from them.
I have paid upfront using paypal for an auction won off them for two output transformers (also asked for a custom power one, too)
18 months ago and had nothing from them.
At fist it was stalling tactics:
item sent
item on way
here's a tracking number (untraceable and fictitious)
item lost in post
item returned
item sent again
here's another tracking number (again untraceable)
item on way
item lost
item never had tracking numbers as sent surface mail (!!)
Now there is no reply to any of my emails (but I know they are read, as reciepts are returned)
I have kept all evidence of this activity and am trying to get compensation, but this will take time
Their prices and pictures are very attractive but BEWARNED!!!

It seems you will have to take them to court like several others have
done. I did get a pair of outputs from them some years ago before they
started their nefarious ways of doing "business". Some have said to
pay a little more and get a Hammond. They are right! I can see
Handwoundtransformers going under within a couple of years.
If you need a custom transformer, contact Peter W. Dahl, 5869
Waycross, El Paso TX 79924, 915.751.2300. They do custom work. It may
seem high if you only need up to a few but their quality is superiour!
I have seen many of their transformers in things and the owners all
agree the quality is worth the price. I have not heard of any of their
transformers going bad. Having talked to Peter directly, he says their
ratings are higher than what is on the label to ensure a longer life.
They do NOT do potted transformers or most audio outputs. I have good
friend who winds my custom transformers. |

That guy used to live in Pgh and sell electrostat speaker kits and some
huge expensive manual for winding transformers. Now it looks like he's
moved about 2 hours north. If he owed me something I would glady take a
road trip to see him.

Thx Mark & Adam,
I would very much like to go up the road to pay 'em a visit ... just a small problem with a "puddle" of water between me and them... ;-)
Thanks also for the aditional info. for custom transformers. I shall look into them.

Nothing lasts forever...... eventually the guy will wither away into the
past. Be warned, don't order from this place. The main transformers that I
received buzzed like a swarm of angry bees! |

I know it's no help now, but for future reference Sowter are very good
and not outrageously expensive and they are in the UK.

His name is David Lucas and he ran ads for his electrostatic speaker
kits in Glass Audio all the time. Pretty much the same story whether
it be speakers kits or transformers from him... just stay away. |

And just for the record I'd like to note (since I get way too many
questions about this), none of the Dynaco clone transformers we
sell are made by that Handwound guy. They're made right here in
Chicago by people who know what they're doing. The Dynaco "clones"
he's "selling" aren't even made right (hint: Dynaco output
transformers do not have 14 layers as HWT suggests).
Some of the complaints I've heard indicate HWT lacks even
basic knowledge. For example, one of our customers claimed
he got a transformer where the DCR of the secondaries between
ground and the output taps measured 10 ohms to the 4 ohm tap,
20 ohms to the 8 ohm tap, and 40 to the 16. What's he doing,
counting turns with an ohmmeter? And not even doing that right?
We've had our stuff checked & double checked by people
who know Dynacos in & out, the ONLY complaints I have ever
heard were from people who forgot the Dynaco color
coding and hooked 'em up wrong (stripes go on one side,
folks, solid on the other, and RED/BLACK is the bias tap,
not the center tap!). And, oh, yeah, we had to replace
a couple of PA774's. Those are a pain 'cause they were
awfully undersized to begin with, even with modern insulation
technology they run hot. That's out of hundreds sold so
far (a lot more than that if you include the ubiquitous
C354 choke).

After almost a year they sent me my transformers after my lawyer got into
the act. The power xfrms were wired so that it would blowup my amp if I had
not checked it first. I felt it was their way of being vindictive because my
lawyer gave them no choice. So even if you get the ordered products, check
the physical sizes and more importantly throw away the color codes.
Cordially,

Not too long ago this outfit seems to have been fairly active,
but appears to be using a similar name. Same general location.
Goto ABPR for a copy of one of their ads taken from the
Winter 1995 issue of Sound Practices magazine.

Handmade is a different company from Handwound (David Lucas). I've
bought from Handmade many times with good service and prices. No
connection except as a satisfied customer. www.hndme.com.
