QPEL (Quarterpixel) support in Philips dvp642 |
|
|
All of you who own a dvp642 and have run into this issue with videos you
have encoded with quarterpixel support, I suggest you send call Philips
TAC, open a case, and follow up with web-based feedback to philips
asking for a "feature enhancement for quarterpixel (QPEL) support in the
next firmware release".
TAC (888-744-5477)
Product Feedback
http://www.feedback.philips.com/consumer/?country=US&language=en¶m1=other
It might be pissing into the wind,... but, I think if enough of us
customers open cases with the TAC(888-744-5477), get the engineer to put
the details in the case, and then reference the case# in the feedback on
the feedback page, maybe we will get a shot at it encorprated into a
future firmware release.
After all, it's just an encoding option that provides for better quality
than even the "slowest" mode on DIVX settings. And the encoding time of
QPEL+Standard mode is about half that of Slowest mode without QPEL.
Post a reply if you've done this. It would be nice to know (at least)
how many have requested the next time I call in to their TAC to complain
about this lack of functionality.
Thanks

Re: QPEL (Quarterpixel) support in Philips dvp642 |

I have sent a message to Philips' product feedback web address in the past
about the pathetic subtitle display. The subtitle letters my player
displays are white and very small with no background color. It would be
really nice, if the player offered some options like in FFDSHOW for the pc,
that allow users to pick the font size and coloring of the subtitles.
In regard to Qpel, I have just fired off a message to the product feedback
web address.
I called the help phone number that came with my player when I first tried
it and discovered how poor the subtitle display was. I waited for about 15
min for a real person to answer. Only after giving all my information to an
operator who asked me to repeat myself 3 times or more, was I told they
would not answer any questions. Not because they didn't know or understand.
They said I would have to call Philips' Canadian office. I called the
Canadian office [ this operator only asked for information once ;-) ] and
was told I would have to wait for the next firmware update. If anyone needs
the Philips' Canadian customer support phone number, here it is:
888-292-3430 Monday to Friday business hours only.
Apart from these 2 problems, the player is ok. I did buy and extended
warranty though. Read your warranty carefully. In Canada, after 90 days
you will pay through the nose to get repairs done. I got a 4 year extended
repair / replacement warranty at Best Buy for $29 CAD.
Just my 2 cents
