Hello, I have been experimenting with creating my own divx
videos for playback on the Philips DVP642 that I have. Almost
every video sample that I create has problems being played back
perfectly. The steps that I take are as follows...

I have an HDTV capture card that I use for capturing shows such
as Survivor and CSI. I create an avisynth script with
commercials edited out and to perform such tasks as resizing the
video to 640x480 (etc) resolution and ivtc. I then open the
script up with VirtualDub and when I edit the properties of the
Divx 5.2.1 compression settings, I make sure that the Home
Theatre profile is enabled. I then set the average bitrate to
3000-3500. I should be able to encode up to 4000 for the Home
Theatre profile, right? I like the high bitrate so that the
video looks as good as I can make it look. I then burn the
completed video back to a dvd for playback on the DVP642.
However, playback is mostly distorted with some scenes playing
back great. I don't really know how to describe the distortion,
but its messy when it occurs. Am I encoding at to high of a bit
rate (3000-3500) and resolution (640x480 or 640x360) and as a
result the picture becomes messy? I thought the specs for a
divx certified dvd player was to allow for video resolutions up
to 720x480 and video bit rates up to 4000kbps. However, the
only way I can seem to get better playback (and then the video
will become distorted but not near as frequent) is when I lower
the resolution and the bitrate to a point where quality starts
to decline, example 512x384 @ 1500 - 2000 average bit rate.

Anyone that can offer some pointers, I would greatly appreciate
it. If I can give any other information that I left out, please
let me know. I would like to figure this thing out and start
collecting some high quality divx videos that I know will play
on future divx players.

Thx

Bill

When you see the distortion, did you try the "press the SYSTEM button
twice trick"? I haven't done any DivX encoding, but maybe if both the
bitrate and resolution are high, the playback begins to get distorted.

Bill, not positive about this, but I recall that the cert for the
dvp642 has a max bitrate of 2000 for avi's. I have no prob
recording 640x480,vmp3,2pass,divx5.2 videos of tv shows.
I generally capture as dvd 720x480,6-8000br,384,48 then
enocde with drdivx 106.

Hello,

Thanks for the replies. I did a little more research over at www.doom9.net
and I found a discussion thread about the dvp642. Turns out that if I
disable the 'Adaptive Single Consecutive' Bidirectional encode setting in
divx 5.2.1, I could then encode video at higher bit rates and resolutions
without any playback problems. However, if the bit rate is set to high for
720x480 resolution, then the video slows down, the audio gets out of synch
or cuts out for several seconds at a time. I am able to encode 640x480 at
3300+ vbr and playback is good. I hope newer generations of divx certified
devices aren't as limited in handling the divx encoder settings.
