I want a DVD player that will do it all and can be upgraded with firmware to
handle new formats.

the "new" format will either be 30Gbyte or 50Gbyte depending on which
"standard" wins out - I dont think a firmware upgrade will help you !!!
the only thing a dvd player needs to play is vob/mpeg1/2 anything else
would be a disaster of huge and absurd complicating proportions

no, not even close....
Here's a list of players that currently are known to support raw mpegs on a
data disk.
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDname=&Search=Search&mpegiso=1&cou
ntry=&orderby=Name&hits=25&Submit2=Search
406 players, half of which many here I'm sure have never heard of, out of
4500 some players |

The new drive won't be a DVD. That's like calling DVD's CD's. I seem to
remember reading that the new disks will store as much as 100 giggs.

DIVX encoded movies would be nice. With it you can store two hours on a |
single CD. The quality is very good. |

If the media file is not DVD-compliant (which is a
specific set of criteria regarding video resolution and
audio format), then you'll need to purchase MPEG2
encoding software and convert the files to DVD format.
One such program is TMPGEnc.
However, some DVD players out there will simply take
MPEG files on the disc and allow you to play them. |

Re: DVD Decrypter & DVD Shrink |
|

Napster's design flaw was that it utilized a central server. Shut
that server down, and you effectively make Napster worthless to all.
That is why programs such as Kaaza and other P2P programs are not
being made illegal - They have no single point to attack and shut
down. Same point could be made with DVD Shrink and Decrypter. You
could make them illegal I guess, but you can't stop me from using them
(The're already loaded on my pc's).

Video Redo.
TMPGEnc
Mpeg VCR
Check 'em out and take your pick. Each is excellent.

That would be my list also.

I use DVD shrink to get the file to fit on a DVD, and I use DVD
Decrypter to write it to DVD. I'm sure you could use Nero, or others
also, but if you already have DVD Shrink and Decrypter (which are
free!) then why look elsewhere?

Re: DVD Copy Sofware |
|

And you are making this way more expensive than it has to be! Why
would the O.P. need Nero (payware) when he could just as easily use
DVD Decrypter (freeware) to write the image to DVD? My advise to
anyone copying DVD's is to try DVD Shrink along with Decrypter 1st.
Those 2 have always worked for me and they are both free...

Re: DVD Decrypter & DVD Shrink |
|

Hi,
It is much, much easier to kill Napster than DVD Decripter and DVD
Shrink.
Napster is a p2p software sharing program which allows people to share
software with everybody else using the internet. But in order to do
that, Napster need to communicate with a central Napster server to
know who-who is online and what-what (ex: MP3 files) are available for
you to download. So basically unplug (literally) that central server
and bye-bye Napster.
On the other hand, DVDDecripter & DVDShrink are just 2 small
stand-alone programs. Once downloaded, no one else know when or where
you are using it them. These 2 programs are available to downloaded
all over the world and it's almost impossible (possible if there is no
more internet) to go after all those download sites. It's almost like
try to catch ALL the fish in the ocean. |

The OP's Philips 642 is an excellent example of a player that
does a good job with MPEG4 & Dvix in several flavors. But
we can't expect "Colin" to have bothered to check out the
actual situation before he spouts off.
To the OP:
Your Philips 642 has a progressive output, it may be that
there is some loss introduced when the author program is
handling a Deinterlace of your original MPEG verses how
the Philips handles it. That is only one possibility, and not
the most likely, as TMPGEnc DVD Author is usually very
good handling interlaced video. I am assuming that you
see this problem with TMPGEnc Authored DVDs played
on the Philips player also.
You might try running your MPEG through VideoReDo's
Quickfix before you author it, to see if that helps.

Try VideoReDo www.VideoReDo.com it's fast,
frame accurate, and has some other useful functions.
It's a 30day trial if I remember correctly.
