I have my first XviD avi with QPEL encoding that my Philips DVP 642/37 can't
play. Is there a way to reencode the file so that the QPEL is removed?

I have used Veedub to split videos and to reencode VBR audio but have never
used it to reencode video. Will reencoding the video remove QPEL?

Don't want to waste too much time on this. What are my options?

I suppose you could transcode the content to a DVvideo codec then back
to divx with the correct parameters. I use mplayer/mencoder for this task.

I just bought an MPEG4 player that supports GMC and QPel, it was only
£60 so over time it will have paid for itself in my own time :)

I have the same problem - had some video's encoded with XVID&QPEL and
bought a Philips DVP 642/17 that complains about QPEL.

I found a workaroud. I used Virtualdub with the latest XVID and LAME
MP3 codec. Opened the original file, under video chose fast recompress;
chose Xvid under compression - used a program called GSPOT to tell me
the bitrate and plugged that in / left all the defaults this time under
Xvid. For audio chose full recompress and under compression chose LAME
MP3 and picked the value it told me in GSPOT - ie. 224kb/s 48000 htz
stereo.. File/Save AVI.

It looks about 90% as good as the original - the extra compression has
made it look a bit blockier. However, it looks and sounds pretty close
to the original.

If anyone knows some better ways to re-encode with VDUB to minimize
changes, let us know.

Thanks

I did basically the same thing. The avi I fixed had a vbr audio though. I
first created a wav file for the audio. Then I selected full processing for
the video using Xvid codec with 2 passes. With the finished video, I
remuxed the audio with Lame compression. I can't tell the difference from
the original, and it now plays on the Philips DVP642 player.

I wonder though, with audio you need to decompress to wav before
recompressing or else you degrade the sound -- or so I have been told. Does
this hold true for video too? Does Virtual Dub decompress and recompress
video on the fly when using full processing or fast recompress?

How did you create the WAV file for the audio? What type of decoder
plugin did you use?

Thanks

That doesn't make much sense. Every time you re-encode something to a
lossy format you will lose some information.

If you're asking if you will improve visual quality by a saving video
file to uncompressed avi first prior to re-encoding it then the answer
is no.
