When in ffdshow configuration, codecs -- if the decoder displayed is
libavcodec then ffdshow is using it's own decoder. If you wish to change
the codec to different one, click on the decoder window next to the format
and choose whatever codec you want to use that may be on your system.
I use ffdshow for subtitles. If that is what you are using it for, make
sure subtitles is checked when in configuration. You can also change the
color and size of the subtitles by going into font.
