Not true. They may have problems with some media but blanket statements
like that are misleading.
Some media, what do you work for them?
Nec drives are well known and prone to require warranty work. This is
very well documented in many review sites and even most like myself
who have bought Nec rubbish and been totally pissed off with
constantly taking it back under warranty.
Not the same problems with my new pioneer 108 drive. Even burns 8x at
12x. Funny how the same media on the Nec wouldn't burn past 4x.

The manufacturer gives these specs (below). More complete listings
(including RW and DL are on NEC's web site.
It seems that DVD-R 4x media from Mitsubishi (Verbatim), PVC (Pioneer), and
Taiyo Yuden (naturally:) will burn at 8x. Others won't.
For DVD+R, the 4x Taiyo Yuden will burn at 8x. Others won't.
It seems that NEC is a bit more conservative than Pioneer with their burn
protocols.

Traditionly, "many" is defined as the number of fingers a typical man
has. Not counting people with birth defects, amputees, medical
students, and serial killers, that's 10. The more contemporary
definition of "many" has been amended to mean "at least 10".

Don't you people know how to use a search engine. Do a net search and
find the links yourself.
Then do a net search on these dvd groups. Hundreds have posted this,
not just 10. Then go to the many forums which are available and do a
simple search. If ytou do not know how to use a search engine then I
can't help you. |

I have 3 NEC dvd burners, and all are working fine.
Don't forget that the Pioneer 108 uses NEC chipsets. :)
|
Every piece of hardware has at least 1 nec chipset in it, what this
has to do with burning is irrelevent and unless you are a complete and
utter moron well you know the line.
Even the worst made pc's ever made have nec chipsets. So does this
mean all nec are bad, no of course not. Adaptec cards have nec
chipsets and are about the best out there. Its all the other bits that
make it the best.
Nec burners are not that good and if you bother doing a net search for
these groups and you will see hundreds of posts saying the same thing.
I suppose yo have to say tha so you don't feel bad you bought the
wrong drive. |

Sigh. Its /BASED/ on the NEC chipset. This is different to just having a
NEC chip here or there. Its more like how motherboards are VIA, Intel,
SIS etc. I've read that Pioneer make their own heads and NEC get theirs
from Sanyo

Rubbish. There are many more posts from people happy with their NECs.
The P108 is a better drive though. If I were to purchase a drive now it
would be the 108. Second choice would be the 3500. But the NEC is not as
bad as you make out. You post childishly.

Good choice on burners. The NEC and Pioneer are the best right now

My Fujifilm 8x DVD+r (Taiyo Yuden T02) "made in Japan" will burn at

faster. Bought 2 50-pack cakeboxes at Best Buy when they were on sale

As usual, TY has the some of the best quality media out there just
like they have for years with CD-R.
NEC has just released new firmware. Get it here:
http://www.de.nec.de/softwareoverview2.php/id/215
along with a media list. There is no official TY 16x media yet. The
fastest +r TY media is the T02 8x.
If you don't mind using hacked firmware you can get the altered 2.18
here http://tdb.rpc1.org/. It allows u to rip at full speed (riplock
removed).

Cool, thanks. I saw the new firmware last night v2.18, should i update the
drive? i dont want to ruin anything. Ive already dumped the v2.16 from my
drive for backup. I got TDK 8x discs and right now they burn at 8x. I heard
TDK was TY T02, but i guess i heard wrong cause my tdk discs say they are
RICOJPN (i forget the media type id at this time). I heard good things about
FujiFilm though. How do i know if the Fujifilms are TY t02 before i buy?
will it say on the fujifilm label? |

Made in Japan. Thats what u need to look for on the outside of the
box. All TY media is MIJ.
The 2.18 is official fw so it won't hurt anything - unless the power
goes out or the system hangs during the update in some cases. My rule
is don't update when there's a chance the power is going to go out
(storm) or my system is unstable (which in my case it never is:).
I'm fairly certain that with the official 2.18 fw the TY media will
burn at 16x. I use the altered (hacked) TDK OEM version of the drives
fw which is at 2.27, and it goes to 16x (the fw doesn't change the
drives manufacturers definition to TDK from NEC - still shows as NEC
in device manager). TY T02 is TY T02, so your TDK T02 should work
just as well as the Fujifilm T02. If you visit the www.cdfreaks.com
and the NEC hardware forum you'll find a TON of info and links to fw
choices, media choices, and why you may want them for riplock removal,
region setting, and for me, single layer/dual layer bitsetting for +r
media.
As for your concern about updating the fw and using hacked fw,
updating has a risk but most, including me, consider it to be very
remote. I've probably changed mine 20 times testing out the many
different choices (including speed hacked betas by liggy) and
reverting back at times without any issues. The hacked fw is being
used by a lot of us with great success. I guess that's all I can say
about that.

EVIDENCE. I'm not asking for your help, I'm asking you to provide the
supporting evidence or corroberation on which you base your claims.
You say that there are "MANY" review websites that confirm your claim,
but you haven't provided even one, much less the 10 you claim to know
of.
I'm not even asking you to prove that that's the case, just provide
some basis for your assertion that NEC drives in general have a higher
incidence of premature failure than other manufacturers' drives. |

I noticed in the readme file that the 2.18 release from NEC will work only
with retail versions. They specifically say that it's not for OEM drives.
Is this true? If it is, where can I get the proper firmware for an OEM

It states "Retail/Bulk, not with OEM releases." In this case I'm
fairly certain Bulk is the OEM version of the NEC drive, like what I
bought from newegg a month ago, and OEM is say TDK's version of the
drive, which you would use the TDK version of the firmware for. I'm
not even sure it matters. I will say this, I loaded this 2.18 on my
3500 and it worked fine. I took it off and reloaded my 2.27 hacked
fw as soon as I found out it didn't allow bitsetting of +r sl media,
only dl. I'll wait until someone at cdfreaks.com comes out with a

OEM (original equipment manufacturer) refers to components sold by a parts
manufacturer to a finished goods manufacturer. For example, NEC sells drives
to Dell, who in turn produce a finished product. So Dell is the OEM, and an
OEM drive refers to a unit sold to such a producer, generally without
cables, manuals, warranty cards, or any other retail-product trappings.
But it this case, it may be that the OEM is a re-label manufacturer who buys
"OEM" drives from NEC, and re-badges them for resale under their own name.
**IF** that is the case, then perhaps the "not-for-OEM" firmware will
actually work with my OEM drive. |
