Some use hacked firmware to burn faster.
Hacked firmware will shorten the life of the recorder.
Buy a pioneer 108 and this will allow burning of a few good brands of
8x up to 12x using pioneer firmware.
Not all 4x or 8x media can burn faster. Fak emeid aoften burns at a
slower speed to the legit media. |

Pioneer 108 is a better unit. Burns to more brands and burns at 12x on
certain media.
Necs only burn at 4x on 8x media:(

Latest firmware is 2.18.
Only Verbatim 16x DVD-R and Taiyo Yuden 16x DVD+R are on NEC's list - but
this pre-dates the latest firmware, so there could be others. Verbatim 12x
DVD+R might burn at 12x but are 79p each.

Not true. They may have problems with some media but blanket statements
like that are misleading.

Indeed. And some 4x media can be burnt at 8x using official firmware.

Some emdia, what do you work for them?
Nec drives are well known and prone to require warranty work. This is
very well documents in many review sites and even most like myself who
have bought Nec rubbish and been totally pissed off with constantly
taking it back under warranty.
Not the same problems with my new pioneer 108 drive. Even burns 8x at
12x. Funny how the same media on the Nec wouldn't burn past 4x. |

I have 3 NEC dvd burners, and all are working fine.
Don't forget that the Pioneer 108 uses NEC chipsets. :)

Traditionly, "many" is defined as the number of fingers a typical man
has. Not counting people with birth defects, amputees, medical
students, and serial killers, that's 10. The more contemporary
definition of "many" has been amended to mean "at least 10".
Please provide links to 10 or more review sites that mention or
suggest a predisposition of NEC drives to premature failure.

Good choice on burners. The NEC and Pioneer are the best right now
(and why not - they both use the same chipset :)
My Fujifilm 8x DVD+r (Taiyo Yuden T02) "made in Japan" will burn at
16x, though I usually only burn them at 12x because it's not that much
faster. Bought 2 50-pack cakeboxes at Best Buy when they were on sale
for $30 each.
As usual, TY has the some of the best quality media out there just
like they have for years with CD-R.
NEC has just released new firmware. Get it here:
http://www.de.nec.de/softwareoverview2.php/id/215
along with a media list. There is no official TY 16x media yet. The
fastest +r TY media is the T02 8x.
If you don't mind using hacked firmware you can get the altered 2.18
here http://tdb.rpc1.org/. It allows u to rip at full speed (riplock
removed).

Well, maybe your NEC drives are prone to problems, but I've got two drives
in my PC, one in my wife's, and one in each of my daughter's computers. Five
drives, operating with no problems for a total of about 7.5 drive-years. |
