Hi guys,

Need a little help. I have a Shure 55 that i picked up off ebay and it
uses the Amphenol(?) connector (3 pin with a threaded circle around it,
looks similar to something i'd plug into my ham radio).

Anyway, i want to put an XLR connector in there so i dont have to get a
special cable for it and it will be interchangable with my other cables,
considering my entire rig is XLR.

Anyone have any ideas for me? I'm thinking some of you old schooler's will
have some insight on this.

Thanks!
Jim

What you need is a Switchcraft L3MN.

The existing Amphenol is removed and the wires are soldered to the
male XLR pins on the L3MN; the connector is then attached to the
mike body with a threaded ring, which engages the existing threads
that were previously used to secure the original mating (cable end)
connector. Fits perfect, looks great. I've converted jillions of old
Shures this way. This is an adaptor that is manufactured *specifically*
to convert old mikes which use Amphenol 3- or 4-pin connectors to
XLRs.

What color of inner liner did you get? faded maroon color?

I have got a couple in my antique collection.

And here is one for the Lord: Shure mike completely round
sphere about 2.5" round or so (not a ball on the end of a
holder). What model is it? I have never seen another one
like it ever. And since the lord is a proudly proclaimed
american, I have a selection of ribbon American mikes.
Two gold head, two metallic black heads. The same mike they
used on the Evil plot of Dr Fu man Chu. Very cool. I am
missing mount clips for two of them though.

Yes, mine came in a maroon-ish color. But if i like this mic and i use it
as often as i'd like, then i'm going to buy some blue replacements. The
ones in it now, are actually pretty clean, but i like the color of the blue
ones.

Thanks!

The maroon just dates it to an earlier model. If its for actual use and
not a collection, it does not matter what you replace it with.
Make sure the shock mount springs inside are tight and not banging
around.

Bob

Bob,

The mic is in excellent condition and everything inside is tight and in
order. Its a great mic. The idea to replace the "silks" (i guess thats what
they are called) came from seeing a pair of blue replacements on ebay.

Lord Valve,

i found a Switchcraft dealer selling this adaptor for somewhere around $20.
is that a normal price? $20 is rather steep. I imagine the price comes
from the amphenol adaptability. If thats a fair market price, then i'll
pay it, but if not, than i'll try to find it cheaper

Thanks again!

I haven't bought any in a couple of years -

I usually buy a dozen at a time. It seems to me that
the last time I bought a batch they were around $7
each wholesale, and I was charging $12 retail
plus installation labor. (1/2 hour.) Try http://www.btx.com/
for starters. If you have a dealer's license (or can act
like you do on the telephone) try Rapco. (1-800-GO RAPCO)
Most *distributors* don't know about this adaptor and
have to look it up when you ask for it. I may have one
or two on hand, but I have a $50 minimum order.

Need anything else? ;-)

Full Compass has Switchcraft L3MN listed as a closeout/special for $9.
