I'm trying to buy my first PC DVD writer. I know there's a lot of
research to be done, but I would like to buy a drive quickly then take
my time learning to use it, so I would appreciate your help.

I plan to make backup copies of my own DVDs, both movies and software
(sims2! yay!). When I got my first CD burner I got burned (no pun
intended) by the fact that some brands, including Sony and Phillips,
didn't allow most copy-protected CDs to be burned, even with the right
software methods being used. Someone recommended Lite-On as a brand
that would burn anything, and I've found that to be true. Are there
similar issues with DVD writers? If so, is Lite-On still the best
brand to look for?

From my research it appears I need a drive that will burn both DVD- and
DVD+. What else do I absolutely need to know before choosing a drive?

Thanks in advance for all help.

Pioneer 108. That's all you need to know.

I have found the Pioneer and Memorex to also outstanding for burning
with DVD shrink, etc. The main drives to stay away from are house
drives unless you can return them. I have found drives with Jing Xing
markings and 1008im to not work.

The biggest issue right now with DVD drives is the same as it was in
the EARLY days of CDRs. Specifically media quality and compatibility.
It seems that very few DVD disc manufacturers have figured out how to
make a high grade/low error disc at a low price, and drive
manufacturers are still having issues with media compatibility, so
even with the same media, you can get different results with the same
media. The LiteON drives don't have a particularly good reputation on
that front, but they seem to be improving with each firmware update
(though those aren't coming out as frequently as they used to in their
reign as the CDRW king).

The current reigning champions are the NEC drives (2500A, 3500A and
variants), and Pioneer (A07/107, and A08/108). The LG drives are also
good. The BenQ and LiteON drives tend to need work but they are
improving, and for the moment, are among the few drives that you can
actually do an error scan with to determine disc burn quality -- which
is sort of weird.

I've got a Pioneer 108, and it works flawlessly with Nero and Verbatim
media.

Can't go past the pioneer 108 drives for stability and reliability.

The thought of Pug Fugley cajoles my mind into reminiscing about the smell
of poppy seeds and the image of morning dew making alt.video.dvdr glint in
the crisp autumn rays of a mature sun.

Many thanks to everyone who replied! I'm so glad there was an easy
answer with so much agreement between posters. And the price is right,
too. The 108 is ordered and on the way.
