I have an MP3/CD/Tape player hooked up to my sound system via the
headphones jack (there is no line out, and the only other output
option is using bare speaker wire with a soldered on adapter). I know
that you can turn the volume down nearly to zero and get it to work
okay, but I'd prefer to know if there is a way to convert it into a
regular line out jack.

I know not to mess with the volume, but I'm not the only one that uses
the sound system, and I've noticed that if it is turned up even
slightly, the power meter will jump to yellow or red, indicating too
much power is being put into the system. Since upgrading the system
is currently not an option, and since I don't want to mess it up and
end up replacing it, is there any way to deamplify the output?

Thanks for any help on this topic!

You don't state how you're going into the system (channel? line in? such as
rca for recorders etc.) so I'll asume you're going into rca line level....
Get a cheap small Behringer or similar unit and feed the output of yout
player into a channel, level it, and take the line out from that into your
line in of your system.
Same thing is done when you come across a cheaper keyboard that only has
headphones out and not a line out.
You have to adjust the volume of your unit so it won't distort, but you
won't hammer the end result.

Pro 'line out' level is around the 1 volt mark.

A battery powered ( usually single cell ) walkman type unit can't even
output a voltage that high through the headphones socket.

It sounds like you're connecting it to an input that's too sensitive. Do
you have another input you can use. The sensitivity of a CD player input
would be fine.

In short, pros would use an un-attenuated mp3 type player headphone out as
line level no problem.

Check your recommended input levels ( you don't state what you're
connecting it to ).

Short of surgery on the MP3 player, you might consider an attenuator cord. I think Radio Shack sells them.

Thanks guys. I think I've found a different solution, based on what
Sonny said. I can use a speaker output to RCA converter in the back
of my stereo, and set it to line out. I didn't realize you could buy
a cable like this. I know it's made for car stereos, but I think it
will probably work fine in my situation.
