- came first. + came later. For recording purposes, they're not compatible,
though most modern burners can handle either one. - is said to be usable on
more DVD set top players, especially the older ones, where + might not play.

If you don't need set top playback, or if your set top can play +, then it
really makes little difference. There are subtle differences, but nothing
major.

While silly, that's really about it. They're competing and
incompatible standards. In the early days, before they were
finalized, they were really different, with different capacities and
capabilities. Now, they're nearly identical with some really minor
differences that really aren't a big deal.

DVD-R is said to be moe compatible with stand alone players, playing
on 90-95% of players. DVD+R is said to be slightly less compatible
with players, playing on 85-90%. On +R, you can usually monkey around
with the "booktype" setting and fool a set-top player into thinking
it's a DVD-ROM to boost compatibility a little. Not sure if the +R is
as compatible as DVD-R when you do that, though.

Both use 5" discs, have a 4.3Gig capacity with single layer discs.

Currently, the +R camp has come out with a DL media first, but it's
not really compatible. First, not all DL capable drives will burn all
DL media brands. Second, about 50% of set top players are said to be
incompatible with the DL media, even with the bit setting trick.
