Hello,

I've got a Pioneer DVR-108 DVD-R that used to read CDs (music,
data...) without any problems until today. It can no longer read CDs,
although it has no problems reading DVDs.

I get no errors. The device spins the inserted CDs and tries to read
them, but after a minute or so it gives up and shows a blank window in
Windows Explorer, as is the CD is blank. I've tried a number of CDs
and I tried the same CDs on another computer, where I was able to read
them, so this is definitely the device issue.

I suspect that the Windows Update that I performed yesterday created
some kind of a conflict and caused this problem. I am using Windows
XP Professional with SP1 and all upgrades up to SP2 (but excluding SP2
itself).

I have also upgraded the DVR-108 firmware from version 1.10 to 1.14
just now, but that didn't fix the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

I'm sorry I don't have a solution, but I wanted to say I have the same
problem, and I too have a hunch it's with the latest Windows XP
update. I changed my BIOS (P4P800-E Deluxe, Intel 865PE MCH chipset,
Pentium 4 3E GHz) to boot from the DVR-108 device with no problem. I
reinstalled WinXP, and applied -all- updates including SP2. Now that
Windows is up and running, I can't read CD-ROMs via on that unit.
When I put in a disk (either music or data) the unit seems to spin
indicating access, but it hangs Windows Explorer. I also have a
Toshiba DVD-ROM (SD-M1402), and it appears to have survived the
Windows update; it works fine. I too would greatly appreciate any
help. Thanks.

Brilliant job, Microsoft. You try to fix your lame security, and end up
breaking our drives. Thanks. (I'm sure glad I didn't bother installing SP2.)

Color me stupid... My problem was a cable. Somehow I swapped out the
high-density HDD cable. When I replaced it (same pin config, but more
wire; I read that might provide better shielding), the drive worked
again...
