I have a large video collection I want to transfer to DVD. I'm waiting
for dual layer discs to be available in the US. As I understand it,
the capacity of today's rewiteable discs is only 2 hrs.

Ant idea on when recorders with greater capcity, ie Blu Ray or dual
layer will be available in the US?

Of course there are dual layer DVD+R discs from Verbatim that can be written
by PC drives such as the Pioneer A08 series. I have found the video
compatability of these to hover around 48%, a value confirmed by more formal
studies (you can google this). The discs have remained in the ca. $13 range
each for seven months. I have therefore rejected the format when an until
it becomes readily available at a reasonable price and more players are
completely compatible with it.

There are no dual layer rewritables at all, and I have read of no one even
attempting to develop it. It would be *really* a problem on a number of
technical levels.

Blu Ray is available in Japan at huge prices. HD DVD is still in the final
development phase. Most industry watchers expect these to be prohibitively
expensive well into 2006, and uncertain in acceptance, since Blu Ray discs
will not play on current DVD players at all.

If you are willing to sacrafice quality, you can place more than 2 hours on
a current DVDR.

Depends on the encoding quality you want and what format you want to
store on those discs.

A single layer rewriteable is 4.3 Gigs. That's enough for 1.5 to 2
hrs of DVD quality audio+video in DVD-video format, or 4hours of VHS
quality video in DVD-video format, lowering the bitrate on the audio
as well can squeeze a few extra minutes here and there too, but not
much.

If you burn a data DVD with the video encoded as DIVX, you might be
able to store as much as 6-8 hours of video depending on choices for
the video and audio stream encoding quality.

Don't know, what to take a guess? It would probably be about as
accurate as anyone else's.

I thought dual layer rewritables were on the horizon and will be
released in the near term? Aren't they already being released in other
countries (eg, Philips in UK)???

You are confused or mistaken. The answer is NO.

So can I infer from this part of your post that you have personally tested
many, many different players and drives for compatability? If not, please
refrain from confusing opinion with fact.

Prices of DL media have started to drop in Australia. Around 25% drop in
four months.

Incorrect. Development of rewriteable DL media is continuing.

Blu Ray will go the way of Beta video recorders. DVD is adequate for 99% of
users needs so Blu Ray will not take off.

There's more to DVD than just video. Archiving solutions could use Blu Ray
and its follow-on technologies. Sony announced that it has a 200 GB DVD disk
in the labs. Just the ticket for data archiving.

DVD may be adequate at the moment but in future I'm sure ther will be a
demand for High Definition, this will be met by Blu-Ray or HD-DVD or
maybe a system that combines the two, as happened with the original
DVDs.

I think the compatibility is partly because the current DL disks are +R
Isn't the Pioneer supposed to be able to write -R DL?
