Novice re DVD |
|
|
We need a new VCR but the shop assistant said that most people buy
DVD/VCRs now. We are not technos. Just want something to record from
TV and watch the odd film on. What will a DVD do for us that a VCR
alone will not? Hope you can give advice on this. Just read that
combination VCR/DVDs are not a good idea - its best to buy them
separately. Diana

Check out DirecTV's $99 "TiVo" DVR, it's a whole new
world.

i dont own one myself, but i know one downfall is if one part dies and you
need to get it worked on, you have to bring whole thing in. we have seperate
dvd and tv in our bedroom, try to stay away from convenient dvd/tv combos
also.

Erm... Play a DVD? That's about it. I don't know about anyone else,
but the reason why I don't like combo box things like TV/VCR, VCR/DVD,
etc is that if one half of the solution goes kaput, you're stuck with
this great big box there where half of the box is filled up with
electronic junk that doesn't work. In some really poor designs, the
circuits are shared to shave off a few bucks, and when that one
circuit goes, the whole thing's dead.
I prefer them separate so that if I want something better or one of
them dies on me out of warranty, I can just slide it out of it's cubby
hole and replace it with whatever I want. It's not like those combo
boxes are really that much cheaper or all that much more compact
either, so I really can't see a purpose for them.

If you need a VCR, buy a VCR. The combo DVD/VCR offers some space savings,
but if you already have a DVD player, you'll just be getting rid of that
one, unnecessarily, if you buy the combo.
As for the combos being less preferable ... well stuff doesn't breakdown
very frequently these days. And the combo units are pretty cheap. There's
little reason to avoid them, if indeed you need both units and don't already
have either one. I would not hesitate to buy a combo.
Consider your needs. At present, you only need a VCR. That's $50 tops. |

DVD is higher resolution mainly. Better sound too if you have a good
sound system.
I recently purchased a VCR/DVD Recorder combo to replace a VCR/DVD
Player combo. Lack of space was my main reason for going with the
combo units. The VCR portion of the VCR/DVD player was starting to
die, but it was under an inexpensive 4 year warranty and has since
been repaired. I'm not as worried about the VCR going bad on the new
unit since I'm mostly using the DVD Recorder. I haven't recorded a
thing to the VCR and only use it for watching pre-recorded tapes and
for dubbing to DVD. So, if something breaks it will most likely be the
DVD Recorder. Besides, the ease of dubbing makes it worth the extra
risk.
Anyway, whether you have a combo unit or separate units if something
goes wrong you will have to get it repaired or replaced. The
difference is that while you could probably get a new VCR or a new DVD
player for less than the cost of repairing it, a new combo unit would
probably cost more than repairing it would.

Not in the UK I believe. One the web I found good quality VCRs at
about £75.
Thank you

Thank you to everyone. I also posted on the other similar ng
