Goodbye VCR, Hello DVD Recorder, Prices are below $200 |
|
|
Looks like standalone DVD recorders are under $200 now. No more capturing
video on my computer and burning to DVD (a pain in the ass). I will have a
recorder by Xmas. At this rate they will be around $100 in 2005.

You wouldn't say that about DVD players anymore and recorders will be just
the same.

A very good recorder, the Pioneer 220, can be had for $220. I would avoid
the iLo, LiteOn simply because of the mono tuner sound.

I admit I've only had a couple but surely you're not suggesting that
progress has now stopped. Just look at PC writers now available for US$50.
Single chip solutions will do for recorders they did for players. The
cheaper ones I've seen look OK and any reliability issues are only going to
get better.
If Pioneer has one now for ~$300 it wont be long before $200 is being
approached by the brands.

Don't you think it would be safer if you would wait until the recorders
that came with a 500 gig hd (give it a year or so) were available? I still
think it's safer to burn to a hd when recording from TV than directly to a
DVD. |

I would....those really cheap dvd players do not perform anywhere near any
properly priced dvd player in video or audio performance. All you have to
do is read the test results on a site like Secrets....

Panasonic has one now (DMR-E500HS) with a 400 GB hard drive. Sure be
nice if I could afford it. That's big enough to record nearly 180
hours at SP mode or more than 700 hours at EP.

No arguments here, I've had a HDD+VCR recorder for several years and I
believe hard drives rather dvd recorders are the biggest leap forward. I
think most people don't actually collect stuff so hard drive provides the
ideal video replacement and combining with a recorder just finishes it off.

Ahh but most people wouldn't. The difference between analogue audio and
video is no longer that great so most people wont notice. When I compare a
cheap Mizuda DVD to my Panasonic or Pioneer the differences are simply not
that great. I can tell the difference but for 99% of people it would be a
non issue.

I would like to have a hard drive on my DVD recorder, but I have had my
Phillips for a year, and all recordings from TV, DVD Player or VCR have
been fine. |

I've had one problem recording from TV direct to the DVR.
And about two other times I've seen 'disk error' show up, but
things continue right along with only a couple of frame glitch
at the disk-error point.
I've probably recorded about 300+ DVDs direct from broadcast or
cable, and about 50 from S-VHS that I'm slowly moving over.
It surely beats recording to a computer HD then burning from there.
