Hi There.

Just got me a Panasonic Fz20. Was wondering if anyone could give
me some pointers, for getting the best picture quality with this camera.

Thanks in Advance .

The only hint I've read is to turn off the noise reduction, as it seems to
affect the JPEG compression. I have done this, but not otherwise tested
the suggestion. Use mode 2 image stabilisation.

By the way, there is a new group for cameras like the FZ20 - ZLR cameras -
here:

rec.photo.digital.zlr

ZLR - Zoom Lens Reflex.. am I missing something here? What's 'reflex' about
these camera's? They don't have a mirror or anything to reflect/bend the
light path do they?

The photons hit the sensor than run around the inside of the camera
coalescing towards the LCD.

If the camera has an EVF and LCD backscreen the term 'reflex' applies to the
interaction between eye and viewfinder

Once the photons "sense" (I use the term carefully) the presence of the
viewers eye that is when the reflex action takes place.

You can see this effect on a moonlit nite with a small disk.

Ig tou move the disk until it just covers the outline of the moon the edge
of the disk will appear to glow as the photons run around the surface of the
disk

Nobody fully understands the full technocalities of how it works but -hey -
it works

The reflex is electronic rather than optical.

None of the compromises caused by the mirror are present in these designs
(providing lenses with back-focus, mirror movement causing shake, acoustic
noise etc.), but they don't tend to have interchangeable lenses - yet.

Might be better to ask at www.dpreview.com forums - they're very active and

there's numerous FZ-20 users there.

It isn't 'reflex' though - its an electronic represention of the image....
but whatever - to me it seems a daft name for a camera that dosen't have an
optical image thats all.

Harvey - I am very pleased you decided to reply.

My explanation about photons coalescing is total wind-up and bunkum!

There is an image showing about 100% of sensed and processed data on the EVF
or LCD

Whether the electronic circuitry which does this is the *reflex* part is a
good question. Whether ZLR is a robust rechnical term or robust marketing
term are also good questions.

FWIW I think the meaning is quite clear but a technical spec would be a
positive step

Aerticus

with apologies for the earlier response :-)

I don't think that anyone was completely happy with ZLR as the term used
in naming the new group, but it seemed better than any other suggestions,
such as:

slr-like-cameras-with-full-manual-aperture-exposure-and-focus-control-and-a-zoom-lens

Cheers,

I think it is a great term. It fits marketing purposes and some technical
purpose.

Should the manufacturers association provide a rule of thumb spec?
