Because it's not MPEG coming from a DV camcorder. It's DV.
Which is significantly more data than the MPEG used for
digital TV.

To elaborate on that, <http://www.adamwilt.com/DV-FAQ-tech.html>.

Although I use firewire, USB2 is faster.
I'm afraid I'd disagree. It is *supposed* to be faster, but USB2 is a
"step-down" communication protocol, and will rarely run at anywhere
near it's max speed (and much slower than firewire).
So why do ext hard drives now utilise USB2 rather than Firewire ?
While all video editors support capture through firewire, not all will
capture through USB2. And relatively few digital camcorders support
USB2, while all support firewire.
Most capture thru usb, usb2 or firewire. My dads sony, my sharp vlz1h
and my brothers ancient (4yrs old) smasung.

Where do you get the idea that "Most" camcorders even have USB?

support USB2. Ditto with video editors.

And what's that got to do with the price of cheese?
Digital camcorders will invariably have firewire, yes, but not so many
have usb. USB has a theoretical transfer rate above that of firewire,
but since DV data doesn't reach anywhere near what firewire tops out at,
and since firewire actually performs better than USB2 in any tests i've
ever seen, AND since firewire is a standard for digital video transfer,
so is supported by far more apps etc, WHY on EARTH would anyone choose a
USB-only DVcam? |

Re: svideo or firewire?-WHAT? |

I guess I am really a very, very, newbe.
I thought svideo is a recording protocall and firewire was a file transferr
protocall.
With firewire you can transferr/capture regular NTSC, Pal, Secam, text
files, graphic files etc, etc etc.
SVHS is a type of video recording, such as regular vhs,(NTSC or Pal) BETA,
DIGITAL Video that can be transfered by firewire, scsi, etc.
I must also be missing something, like perhaps the original post, but as it
stands the question just does not make any sense.
Yours, a very confused,

S-VHS is a higher quality version of VHS video format. S-Video is a
video hookup, like RCA plugs are. It is a higher quality display, but
your source and your monitor must have S-Video connectors.

s-video is analogue. Firewire transfers digital data (in the context
of camcorders that means (usually) DV), though because MPEG-1, MPEG-2
and MPEG-4 are digital video, they could (unusually) be transferred by
firewire. To transfer s-video by firewire it would first have to be
digitised and would no longer be s-video.
There's something about different video formats and
recording mediums at:

Your explanation could cause confusion, and equating with RCA
composite is incorrect.
S-video carries separate Y (luminance+sync) and C (chrominance)
signals. RCA carries composite video.
