minimum CPU speed (x86) for playback |
|
|
Hi all,
Some time ago I took a Divx that I had made on a fast machine
and tried playing it on a 700 MHz desktop Pentium III, and
found that the playback program was skipping frames and
acting erratically. Can someone tell me what the minimum CPU
speed is then for playing back a Divx or an Xvid? Or is that
just a function of the bitrate? I was using a standard bitrate
AFAIK since I hardly altered the encoder program settings.
I believe I had done two or three passes in the encoding.
Thanks..

Ditto...I had fine success with all the proper win98 and drivers loaded on
a 400 AMD machine. Granted, nothing else at all was running to get it. You
almost double that with 700mhz.

it's much more complicated than that. the 700khz machine (should)
be able to play dvd quality divx.
what player program are you using? what codec version? does
the mpeg4 stream contain B frames?

Your 700 Mhz Pentium is certainly powerful enough to play divX files,
with two caveats -- the movie's video resolution and operating system
you use for playback.
The larger the file's resolution, the faster the processor speed need
be. For example, my larger resolution files that won't correctly play
under Windows and my Athlon 700 K7, play back effortlessly under
Linux.
So, resolution and operating system should be kept in mind when trying
to play back the various divX flavors. Also, try turning down the
playback setting of your software divX player to eliminate the
jerkiness.
By the way, what's the resolution of your file?

You do not mention size, fps, and playback program and OS. |
I think 700 MHz should be enough for 720x576 @25fps AVI in mplayer Linux.
But then again I use AMD...

I tried playing the file with both WM9 and the Divx.com player.
As for codec, it was the latest, but this was about a year ago.
I don't know about B frames, but I encoded using the excellent
program FairUse, which used to be freeware (http://fairuse.free.fr)
but now costs 10 Euros. I remember that I had anti-interleave
enabled.
Also on this 700 MHz machine, I had successfully played back
a B&W movie that was encoded using Xvid.
Thanks for any help... |

Yep, like I mentioned in my post to the original poster, Linux works
WONDERS in playing back larger resolutions that Windows chokes on!
This is CERTAINLY a feather in Linux's cap. :)
