Epson Photo R320 - Photoshop CS Color Issue |

I wonder if anyone has had this problem.
I'm trying to print to an Epson Stylus Photo R320 using color management
from Photoshop CS. I'm using the instructions from Epson Print Academy and
turning off the printers ICM. The prints produced this way are dark with a
slight green color cast. I have checked to see that the appropriate settings
for source space and printer space are checked (Source Space = Adobe RGB;
Printer Space = Stylus Photo R320 Series with Intent = Perceptual and Black
Point Compensation = checked).
I am able to get relatively good looking prints using Epson's Color Controls
settings.
Any ideas of what I may need to change in order to use Photoshop's color
management?

Do you have an accurate monitor profile? If you do not have a colorimeter,
like the Spyder, have you done the gamma thing? If there is no printer
profile the color management system does not work and obviously an accurate
printer profile can only be obtained with a colorimeter (the $99 spyder is a
bargain).
Also in Photoshop check under view/proof setup that monitor RGB is selected
as you work on your images. It is possible that you are doing your image
manipulations in the wrong profile space.
In the Epson driver on the first page select the paper type and set the mode
radio button to custom. Select print preview.
Then go the next page of the driver ("paper" on the 1280 driver)4.
Choose your dpi (at least 1440) and check ICM. All the other selections
should disppear or grey out.
When you click the appropriate buttons to print you should get a preview
that is a reasonable (but not necessarily exact) color approximation of the
final print.
It sounds like you are not selecting ICM in the printer driver itself.
If you see an overwhelming pink cast on the preview then you have applied
color management more than once in Photoshop and in the printer driver.
If you understand how to use the Epson driver, selecting "output" rather
than "color management" in the print preview thing and are getting
satisfactory results there is no problem printing that way. However once you
get the color management thing down with Adobe and Epson it is much easier
to get a reasonably good color balance on the first printing try. |

I'll just chime in with a "me, too". I use the Photo Stylus 900 and believe
I'm following all the instructions I can find (virtually identical settings
to yours as above, with ICM checked but "No color adjustment" selected in
the printer driver) and my results sound almost exactly like yours: a bit
dark with a slight green cast - acceptable for landscapes or architecture
but really bad for people (skin tones shot to hell).
It doesn't help that Epson apparently only made one profile for the Photo
Stylus 900, whereas you can find gobs of profiles for 890s, 960s, 1280s,
etc. - while both the 890 and the 1280 (I'd think) should be pretty close in
profile to my 900, using the ICC profiles for these printers does not
produce perceptibly better prints than the 900 profile.
What paper are you using? Some papers have icc Profiles, which are great |
if you can find them.
The instructions for Ilford's Classic Pearl work well on a Mac with the
R300, and are very well written, so I suspect the Windows instructions
will be clear as well. On the Mac version, they make a point of saying
be sure the color correction button in the driver dialogue is unchecked.

Interesting thing about that particular printer is the instructions from |
Epson don't work! Well, they don't work for me. I found letting the printer
manage the colour was the only way I could get it happening. In fact I have
a Postscript laser, a HP designjet and a r310 on my PC. The only printer I
can absolutely rely on is the HP but since I let the printer manage colour,
I've had good results from the Epson. Here's how you do it.
Under file go the print with preview and tick the box "show more options".
In the print space it probably says "same as source". If it does, change it
to "printer colour management".
If you get a decent print then, you can easiely substutute Epson's ICC paper
profiles for the printer colour management and turn off the printer's colour
management. Otherwise, let the printer manage colour. |

I have the RX500 (all-in-one version), and I get very good output.
If the prints are way too dark, you apply far too much ink for the
paper.
MyIlford paper say to select Overhead Transparencies rather than
Photo paper to get as thin a layer of ink as possible. I select
ICM and no color adjustments in the printer driver. The preview
looks very bad, and far too bright, but it is perfect on paper.
In Photoshop I select some RX500 profile, the one for transparencied
or most expensive photo paper.

Many thanks to all who have responded.
The above, re: Ilford paper: I'm using Ilford Gallerie Smooth Gloss. It
might be the culprit, but I'm leaning more towards something I'm doing wrong
in Photoshop.

The instructions that come with all the Ilford papers that I looked at
are superb, and may help out a lot.
I just set up a new computer, and ran a test strip on a few images in a
contact sheet. All too dark! Then I slapped my forehead, went in to PS
CS and set up the Ilford profile as I had done the previous day on my
now backup computer, calibrated the monitor by hand (easy to do on Mac),
made no changes to the images, and they printed perfectly. At least as
perfectly as I am able to do at this point.
