Hi all

I normally hang out in rec.music.classical.recordings. This is my first
post to rec.audio.pro, and apologies in advance for the length.

I have a Sony CRX230ED writer, which came with NewTech InfoSystems (NTI)
Gold software supplied. Also a 250 GB HD onto which I am storing my
classical CD transfers as WAV files within named folders (ROCD 0001,
ROCD 0002 etc).

The NTI CD-Maker Gold version that came with the writer is 6.7.0.1608.
I was advised by NTI TechSupp to upgrade to 6.7.0.2802, which I did.

Internet connection disabled, to suppress the interminable and (for me)
unnecessary CDDB search which NTI launches when it detects nonblank CD
in the drive. (No cancel button!!!)

I want to rip tracks from the CD in the drive to WAV files stored in
uniquely named folders. Here's what happens:

Load CD into drive. Assume (for simplicity) 4 tracks:

track 01 - 10:00
track 02 - 09:00
track 03 - 08:30
track 04 - 11:00

... to be stored in ROCD 0001 folder.

1. Start NTI CD-Maker

2. Data / Audio /Advanced / Backup / Copy / Video screen
[click Audio]

3. Pop-up: Audio CD [Live Audio / MP3 CD / WMA CD grayed
out] Audio Player. [click Audio]

4. "Easy Steps" screen #1. Top half is "My Computer"-type
display for source files

5. Click on drive with CD (H in my case). Prompts for loading
CD if not already loaded.

6. Top right half displays "track 01, track 02 ... track nn"
and lengths for all tracks on the source CD.

7. Select all the tracks. Right click. Click "Convert Audio
Format."

8. As many screens with "Save" button appear as there were
tracks selected. Set the target folder (ROCD 0001) in the
"Save In" field. Click "Save" on each screen for each
track.

9. NTI will copy each selected track to a similarly named
WAV file in the target folder. (Unless I rename the
target WAV file).

--> The first such session is always successful. The resultant WAV file
lengths are equal to those of the source tracks, as expected.

Now assume we want to rip tracks from a different CD to a different
named folder.

track 01 - 20:00
track 02 - 15:00
track 03 - 17:20

.... to be stored in ROCD 0002 folder.

10. Unload the 1st CD and exit the "Easy Steps" screen.

11. Same steps 2 thru 8 as above. This time I select "ROCD 0002"
as the target folder.

HERE'S THE PROBLEM!!

CD #1 track 01 length was 10:00, remember? NTI doesn't! After the
first session, NTI **ignores** the track lengths of the current CD and
tries to write WAV files whose lengths match those in the 1st session.
So the resulting WAV for CD 2 track 01 will be 10:00 (not 20:00) because
that what NTI "remembers." Something is not getting cleared out!

I also had instances where a given track for the original CD was
**longer** than the equivalent track for a subsequent CD. In such cases,
NTI wrote the given track in its entirety, followed by as much of the
next track as would fit in the extra space!!

I tried writing tracks direct to the target drive without using a
folder. No difference.

I tried renaming the target track (ex. trk 01). No difference.

Oddly, NTI performed correctly for two days, then started behaving as
described above with no changes in the computer environment or my
procedures.

The only way to assure a good rip is to reboot for each session!!

NTI TechSupp has been responsive and courteous, but all they could
suggest basically was to reinstall.

Please, any ideas?
