Why when I am trying to watch some DVD's that are recorded in 16:9 format do I get black bars on top and bottom. My HDTV is 16:9 and HD broadcast shows appear fine.

Hello, it's because the movie was originally shot in an aspect
ration even wider than 16/9.

The producer of the DVD maintained that same A/R for the DVD,
thus the black bars, top and bottom.

Broadcast, on the other hand, is set to the size of 16/9 exactly,
and as such, it fits perfectly.
