Studiofoam placement |
|
|
I have some studiofoam sound absorption panels for my studio, and I
need to know where the optimal placement is to help me get the best out
of my mixes.
I would guess that I should place some behind where I normally sit to
listen to my monitors to prevent sound reflections causing phase
cancellation.
Would ther ebe any reason to put some on the wall behind my monitors to
further counteract reflections?

Place it on surfaces where sound will be reflected into your ears. One
popular trick is to sit in your normal mixing position and have a
helper move a mirror around on the walls and ceiling (that's the hard
part). Any place where you can see the monitor speakers in the mirror
is a good place to put foam.

It depends on how far behind you the wall is. |

how much square footage do you have.
the first place to put it is on the sidewalls, where the sound would
hit your ears. you have a friend slide a mirror along the wall. and
when you can see the speaker in the reflection, you put foam on the
wall there. then you do the same thing on the other wall.
next would be the wall behind the speakers, so you don't get sound
bouncing back and then forward at you, out of time from the original
speaker sound.
the back wall you would probably want "diffusors"... things that
scatter the sound in all different directions rather than absorbtion
stuff. that way you still have some live feel to the room, but it's
scattered enough to provide some background spaciousness rather than a
direct ray reflection of the mix. |

These things only deal with high frequency reflections... which are
pretty easy to localize. Clap your hands. Where do you hear the sound
coming back from? That's the place to put the foam. If it's going
"boing" look at both the surfaces involved in the reflections and consider
treating both.

In a control booth, for the most part high frequency reflections from
behind you aren't so bad a thing, whereas reflections from in front of
you are bad. So you will get more by putting the stuff up at the front
of the room than behind you, for playback. Problem is most folks have
big glass windows behind the monitors, which is the worst possible thing
from an acoustical standpoint.
