Hey everyone,

This is kind of weird.

I recently bought an RCA DVD player (RC5231Z) which can also play DivX
and audio CDs but NOT, according to the directions, VCD or even CD-R.
(I can't complain because I got this thing used for VERY cheap, but
still....)

But anyway, not only does the manual explicitly state that CD-R cannot
be played on this machine, it actually has this warning:

-----------------------------------------------------------

DO NOT Use CD-R Discs!

The wavelength of the pickup of this
DVD player may cause CD-R discs to be
erased. DO NOT play CD-R discs in this
player!

------------------------------------------------------------

I've never heard of such a thing. Is this for real? Honestly, it
smells a little fishy to me. What do you all think?

Rob

I think I would try it just to see if it is true.
Burn a CD-R with something and let it play over
and over again every night while you are sleeping
for a week.

It's not so much the wavelength (though the wavelength has to be absorbable
by the dye), but rather the power of the laser. I just don't think the level
required for playback is able to erase _anything_.

The laser used for playback on a typical CD player will indeed erase a
CD-R.

It seems to take about a year for a ten-minute section on continuous repeat
to start having errors, though. I have friends who use CDs in museum displays
who were really freaked out when they figured this out. Anyway, they still
last a LOT longer than a cart.

Fascinating. It makes sense, but I've never heard of it happening before,
though.

Well, I just tried to play a CD-R that I didn't care about, and it
wouldn't work at all. I suppose I could try other brands and other
burn speeds, but I'm inclined to say eh screw it because after all I do
have other CD players and I was just curious.

Unless somebody knows of a quick fix, of course...anyone? ; )

If they go to the trouble of explicitly disclaiming responsibility, odds
are fairly good that they know what they're talking about. Sometimes the
laser strength's too high, sometimes the frequency's one that CDRs don't
work well with, sometimes there are other issues. My Sony DVD jukebox
doesn't even try to read CDRs.

As others have commented, however, this may just mean you need to plain
on using "sacrificial" copies of the CDRs... so give it a try on a spare
copy and see what happens.

Alternatively: That same player which dislikes CDRs seems to be
perfectly happy with DVD+R media; it plays successfully, and the best
evidence I've found so far is that it's nondestructive. I haven't yet
tried recording an audio CD onto a DVD+R disk, but that might work...
and while the media isn't quite as cheap, it still beats cassettes by a
mile.
